Hmm, I restocked my Garand last year and I haven’t taken it out since. I’ve got 1k of 60’s M2 ball for it, so I have no excuse.

Thats my elk rifle,  using Fed. Premium 180gr Partitions.

My deer rifle is a 1948 vintage Model 70 in .30 Gov't 06.

It seems to regular, cheap Federal blue box 150gr soft points.  It wears a steel body Weaver K4 scope.

Yeah, who wants ammo commonality between your bolt action battle rifles,  that you have millions of, the M1906 BAR, and your M1919 Browning machine guns, with your new semi-automatic battle rifle?

It’s a great caliber though it’s roots are the Mauser cartridge. 375 Holland does everything the ‘06 can do with the same bullet drop but cover more game. The problem isn’t that the ‘06 is bad, the problem is it’s long associated as a fudd caliber and shooting one makes you a fudd(to many).

How well does 5.56 handle bear?  Aught-six does right well on blacks, and will certainly be better than any .22 ever built on browns and polar.

I inherited a Model 70 from my Dad as well.  He bought it back in the early 80s, shot it a couple times to site it in, shot two deer with it and put it in the safe.  I cleaned it up, took it out to shoot it and stock cracked.  So I need a new stock and want to put a scope on it.

The only 30-06 I have is a M1 Garand made in 1941. Somehow I feel like this is fitting. I've killed a lot of animals over the years, but never with a 30-06. For anything deer sized and smaller I prefer a .270 or less. For anything elk sized and bigger I really prefer something larger than the 06. It's a great cartridge, but IMO their are better options these days.

Very true, but the 30-06, the 30-30, and .22 is just plain old American as fuhk.

One of the gun writers put together an article stating that a man should have three rifles for all of North American hunting 'needs'.

Something smaller for thin skinned animals.  Deer/Pronghorn/Elk?/etc.  I like personally like the 7mm-08 for that role, and I recognize the .260 & .243 make for great light-weight rifles for that too.
This is the gun you'd be using most, so no need for shoulder pounding larger calibers.

Something for Large/Dangerous game.  Moose/Elk/Bear/etc.  300 Win Mag, .338, or the like works.
I don't believe you'd be shooting too much with these larger calibers.

Then something for varmints.  Coyote/Prairie Dogs/etc.  I haven't shot or even read much about this category, so fill in your own calibers.

With all that said, I don't have ANY experience on shooting stuff larger than a Whitetail Buck and I have a 30-06, a 30-30, a 12GA slug barrel, and .50cal M/L for that.  I'll eventually use my AR for this for myself one of these days.  Heck my son has taken his first deer with my AR - The only kill that gun has under its belt.

Sorry for the hy-jack.

I love my Encore's 30-06 barrel and the hand-loaded 150GR Sierra Game Kings loaded up with 58.5gr. of IMR4350.  3/4" at 100yds.

For ethical bear hunting, I absolutely agree with you. I would still bet money and my life on a 5.56 mag dump vs. any bear though, and it’s a little more versatile for other purposes.

I agree!

I have a Lyman Receiver sight on my Mauser 3006 and a 6x scope on my Remy 700 .270 win.(necked down 3006! LOL!)
(At one point I thought about rebarreling the .270 to .35 Whelen but the 06 is almost perfect!)

ETA: I shoot 130gr in my 270. But I can/do shoot anything from 110gr to 220gr in my 06. I even have some 220gr Berger bronze solids I can load up for "dangerous" game.

I personally believe that the AR-15 makes for an excellent survival rifle.

-Adjustable stock for multiple shooters and clothing requirements ?   Check.

-Taylor your bullets for task specific requirements ?  Check.

-Swap out your red-dot with pre-sighted in hunting scope and then back again ?  Check.  [ Thx to LaRue who damn-near perfected that market ]

-Install .22 conversion kit and a pre-sighted in red-dot for small game ?  Check.

-Pre-Threaded barrels for... reasons.  Check.

I can absolutely tell the difference in Recoil between the two and don't consider myself to be real shy either. I believe I read somewhere that it was measured at around 17% difference in recoil using the same weight bullet. That's not a ton but it's also not insignificant either.

If the weapon weight, bullet mass, and muzzle velocity is equal there is no difference. Physics and all that jive.

Well the one thing you haven't considered is that the .308 uses less powder to achieve the same velocities while using the exact same bullets. With some powder and bullet combos in the 150-165 grain range, the .308 is conspicuously faster using less powder. In short, less big boom magic dust to go the same speed equals less hurt from death stick.

I like my .30-06. My main deer rifle. Accurate as heck. It's an old Remington, with tweaked trigger, bedded action and barrel. I handload 150g Nosler BT (forget what powder at the moment) but I put three rounds in the diameter of a dime at 100 yrds a few years ago. Posted them here a long time ago. I'll have to find that picture.

150g for longer range, flat shooting and up to 220 grain for busting through WUT-EVAR.

Today 06 is great

And I suspect, 100 years from now as people on the internet argue whether it's better to neck up 22 squirrelblstr or more efficient to cut and reform 338 superbloot to make brass for their long out of production 6.5 meme, you'll still be able to go to space Walmart buy a box of freaking 30-06 corelokts and kill the hell or if moon deer.

The only two guns I ever bought at a gun show were both .30-06.  First, a 1943 M1 Garand with CMP stamped stock.  Then, a few months later, a Mossberg 100 bolt action with a variable power Bushnell scope, which was a ton of fun for hunting wild hogs.

I hadn't even built my first AR yet, and shamefully didn't really know what made them so desirable.  I figured they were the overpriced gimmick (based on gun show prices) that scared leftists for irrational reasons.

It wasn't until PSA helped me understand the value of being able to use bulk milsurp cartridges and build rifles cheaply from parts kits that I figured it out.  I had been handloading IMR4895 to roughly M2 specs for the Garand with a Lee hand press, as supplies of genuine M2 milsurp ammo were almost gone when I got started.

The Berger 230 OTM fits at mag length.... well.. I load at about 2.830" but could go shorter with maybe a tiny bit of ogive going into the neck. With W748(41.55gr******) in Lapua brass, Wolf LRP I get about 2300fps out of my 19.75" R700(10 twist). The 3.245" single feed load(.010" off the lands) with the same but using W760(47.7gr ******) gets around 2370-2420fps, it's temp sensitive but still holds groups.
These are both about 5k psi over my 175SMK at 2620fps and 7k psi over the 175SMK at 2550fps as measured by my PressureTraceII.

*******Don't use this exact load! Work up! your chamber, free bore, case cap, temp, bullet coating, etc. will all effect pressure. These are loads made up 100% by me, I don't use loading manuals for obvious reason.
