Thats the way I learned it. And three on a tree in a 70 El Camino.

I agree. Dogleg, for the win. I just wish I could find a dogleg gearbox for my track car that wasn't the price of a ransom.

My soul has the reverse on the far left after lifting the bezel, kinda neat

I will stick with conventional thanks.
Although I do have to watch myself. Two of the vehicles in our house are traditional 5 speeds (reverse below 5th), my daily is a 6 speed with reverse all the way towards the driver and up (next to 1st). Couple times now I have almost pulled off a 5th to R shift in the five gear vehicles. |

Why don’t you explain it and make a case before I report you for trolling, OP.

At least twice now I forgot to lift the gate and went in 6 and started to move forward thinking I was in R. It's funny how old habits are hard to break when your not really thinking about it. |

I never had more that 3 or 4, any more than that get a row boat.

The favorite of my semis shifts like that, then you flip the switch and get 6-10 in the same pattern. It is the natural shifting pattern.

Quoted: Absolutely this. You should move the stick BACK to go back. View Quote Yep....I have driven other patterns, but I have a Mustang 5 speed as a DD....I had a Datsun 280Z for a decade which was the same. The pattern makes more sense to the mind, if you move the shift backwards to go backwards. I have driven some of these other wild patterns and I currently have a Class A CDL, so I can drive that Eaton Fuller that another poster posted above, but for a standard road car or truck, first gear needs to be up and to the left and everything corresponding in an "H" from there. If you want to go reverse, then reverse your gear shift. |

Reverse on mine has a stiff lockout (you basically have to smack the shifter over to open the reverse gate. Couple times I have been napping at a light or making a multi point turn in a hurry and thrown my truck in reverse when I wanted 1st (oops). Has a short throw shifter so it is a little hard to tell what gear it is in sometimes. My smog guy almost put my truck through the wall of the shop when backing my truck onto the above ground dyno. Tire shop guys just have me pull my own truck in/out. |

When driving hard, I'd rather have 2nd right behind 1st.
Even with a short throw, I'm faster 1st to 2nd than 2nd to 3rd. |
