I have a rough sawn 2x8 cedar board I'm going to use for a mantel and I really like the color and rough cut . It will be indoors out of direct sunlight. Does it need to have a finish applied to preserve the color and protect the wood ? If so, what to use that won't change the color or characteristic of the wood ? -Thanks

The rough sawn surface will be nearly impossible to keep clean.  You won't be able to wipe away the dust.

Left unsealed. it will get stained by anything (even water).

Watco oil, tung oil, clear shellac, BLO, even polyurethane would be better.

Yes you need to seal it to prevent stains. Water based sealer by miniwax wont change the color. Their water based sealer is tough and great for indoors.

Any oil finish will amber the wood changing the color.
