Tampons are good for plugging up puncture wounds and the pads make good dressings. Just make sure you get the non-scented type so you’re not injecting the scent chemical into the wound.

I keep a handful in my pocket at all times. Never know when you’re going to get shot.

No, but I do have z-folded gauze, combat gauze and CAT tourniquets.

I think the consensus has changed form tampons to clotting agents and tourniquets.

I keep a few in my range bag, and several boxes at home. They make fantastic post-shtf trade fodder. Make friends with the females, and you have many advantages.

If you are going to the trouble of buying tampons for first aid what not just buy the correct bandage?
I mean.... its not that difficult. |
|
Tampons may stop a nose bleed. But, they are no bigger then a 4x4 , the stuff you fold up and tape on after you get a needle.
|
|
WRONG, tampax are designed to absorb blood and a good bandage is designed
to clot blood. Look at at a quality bandage and the weave in them, they make the bleeding stop. |
|
Tampons don’t stop bleeding they catch it. Buy some quick-clot it’s 2021 the stuffs readily available.

No I don't think surprise menstruation is a risk I need to have a plan for

I took a Stop the Bleed training over the summer and the instructor explicitly said that it wicks blood and delays clotting. As I have no firsthand experience, unsure if he's right, but it makes sense. I suppose you use what you have available, it the wound is bad enough |

Everyone I know who uses them bleeds for a week. I don’t have time to bleed, and certainly not for a week. I’ll stick with bandages, gauze, etc.

It’s a bit early to shoot for dumbest post of the year, but I admire your dedication.

Hmmmm, a device designed to insert into a bloody hole and swell up and stop the bleeding.
What use could it be in combat wounds.....? |

Better than nothing, but I have proper FA supplies on hand. Wife and step-daughter never used tampons, so there never were any in the house to begin with.
Always have extra pads on hand though. Learned that lesson when we had to bug out for a hurricane and both lady's monthly bills came due at the same time during the movement. Pro-tip for the basement dwellers: Many (if not most) ladies restrooms in public buildings and larger businesses have feminine hygiene product dispensers that you could raid for emergency FA supplies. |

Quoted: Tampons are not viable for wound packing. View Quote Women use them monthly for that very purpose. Seriously, though, it was a semi-serious question. I figured that tampons are small, come in a sealed package, and would be good for non-arterial puncture wounds. I have sterile gauze, QuikClot, and other assorted tools in my FAK. I've learned from the serious responses here that: A: Tampons don't hold enough blood to be really useful. B: They aren't hemostatic - just absorptive. Probably OK for a nosebleed, but not much else. As for Maxi-pads, I think they might be useful, but gauze packs are designed to do a better job. It was just a thought. |

I took a Tactical Combat Casualty Course a few months back and asked the EMT and doctor teaching it about tampons and both said no way. Both had been in combat and they said there are simply way better tools out there to use. |

I'll stick with TQs and compression bandages. My wife can carry the tampons.
