What are the disadvantages of a really low volume mask (like almost freediving volume sizing) for scuba? I've read conflicting reports about restricted visibility, especially downwards, would like to get the opinion of someone who actually uses one.

Some people report feeling claustrophobic or don’t like a lens that’s right on their eyeballs.

I use a low volume ScubaPro mask but it’s not as extreme as some of the low volume “tech” masks, such as from DGX.

I use a Salvimar Noah for SCUBA.  Yes the lens is close to your eyes, but this feature allows for the same field of view of a larger mask, further from your eyes.  Lense can be considerably smaller when close to your peepers to get the same results.

Easy to clear.. I barely have to let out a puff to clear.
Conversely, they fill pretty fast!

All that being said, I'm sold.
I dive just about every weekend, so heavily used equipment here.

I don't see any disadvantage to a low volume mask.

Smaller volume, less mask squeeze; less water, easier to clear; newer masks have great visibility.

If I had to go back to using old-school mid- and high-volume masks, I'd quit diving.

FWIW I dive those super low volume tech mask that love them. It was a little weird at first but I like the feeling now. I use them to reduce dill usage clearing my mask on my rebreather. It’s actual effectiveness though is probably laughable. It makes me feel like I’m doing something though. Haha
