In my experience, the higher up you go on the O scale the less principled and direct the individuals are. It's no different than it is in the vast majority of corporations. If you want to take any sort of principled stand on anything, you don't get there. In the corporate world, this means that unless you are the owner, you won't get above middle management. Similarly, unless you want to play a major role in the continuing soap opera / politics / wife's breast implant bullshit that the vast majority of senior military officers do, you won't get above O-3. Maybe O-4 if you're lucky. Above that, it should be expected that you are nothing more than a big ball of clay happy to be molded to whatever the current political climate is.
