D.C. Mayor Bowser: Dem-Led House, Senate Will Pass D.C. Statehood, Bring It to Biden’s Desk
Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser told “Just the News” on Friday that the Democratic-led Senate and House will vote in favor of statehood for the District of Columbia and send the bill to President Joe Biden’s desk, who has expressed support for D.C. statehood in the past. ***we had our first successful vote on statehood in the House of Representatives last year. She reintroduced the bill. She has a record number of sponsors.” She continued, “It is going to be reintroduced in the Senate in a couple of weeks *** We literally have no one to speak for us in the Senate. We have to have full representation.” View Quote This will likely be Harris's first tie breaking vote and I have no doubt Biden will sign it, and signify the start of permanent Senate control. A side question, I wonder if and when it is passed if it makes the mayor the acting governor and she gets to instantly appoint two new senators? |

Puerto Rico is also in there. And the requirement that all states conduct California/Chicago style elections.

You all do realize all they need is a majority vote in the House and Senate (They will nuke the filibuster) and FJB signs it. Done, welcome to the 51st state and we are forever fucked.

needs to be ratified by 2/3 of the several states.

I thought it was 2/3 and we knew it was Dc first, then PR How do new states become part of the U.S.? The process of creating a new state is written in Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution which reads, "New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress." "The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to Prejudice any Claims of the United States, or of any particular State." *** Congress has the power to admit a new state, but the president has to sign the territory into statehood to make it official. |

The dems can vote and sign all they want but it will take a constitutional amendment ratified by either the legislatures of three-fourths of the states or state ratifying conventions in three-fourths of the states.

Is adding states to the union something that requires a constitutional convention?
I know circa 1936 era Alaska and Hawaii weren't states yet. NINJA EDIT: Googled it. Hawaii was added in 1959 via the Hawaii Admission Act, which was a bill passed by congress. Alaska was added in 1958. Alaska Statehood Act. So apparently you don't actually need a convention to do it. I'm not sure if it's just like "any other bill" or if there's special requirements. The US territorial holdings are a little wack. We have a trade embargo with Cuba yet Gitmo is in Cuba, etc. |

So, where will the Capitol get moved to? It's not supposed to be in a state, that's why the district was created in the first place.
Perhaps Washington County Kansas would be a good central location. But with all of the government offices and employees gone, I wonder if Washington DC would be able to support itself as a state? Probably not. So it makes more sense to just move the Capitol completely since we will have to do that anyway and then give DC back to Maryland. That way the people of DC get their statehood, as part of Maryland and everyone is happy. And what with all the modern technology there is little need to have the Capitol in one place anyway. All the covid work from home stuff has taught us that. Maybe Congress should meet in a different state every year and all of the various agencies should be scattered around the country so everyone can benefit from their Federal wisdom. It would be good for those people to actually spend time with their beloved constituents instead of in one city surrounded by more government types. |

calling BS on Puerto Rico being red. PR is so corrupt that ALL birth certificates issued prior to July 2010 had to be invalidated due to rampant fraud. Imagine that, the entire territory of Puerto Ricans had to have new BC's issued. Ive worked cases against Puerto Rican organized crime groups in the US and i can tell you its no better than Mexico. Sure there are a lot of good people there but there are still some impediments to just anyone hopping on a plane and coming over. Make it a state and were screwed.
