Me too. Not too long ago I got nailed for speeding in the rural county I live in. The following week, after a shitshow of a work day, head over to pay the fine. Eldery lady in her 70s mentions it's because nobody could find it otherwise. We end up shooting the shit about guns cause of the shirt I'm wearing. Convo turns to work due to my mentioning just got off work at 0800 and headed straight to pay the fine. She reflects, it must be a good gig as I seemed happy! Truth was I was fried after 12 hour shift of hell, was paying a couple hundred for the ticket and just wanted a drink and sleep. What really pisses me off about dealing with poophead customers is when you have a pussy for a boss, it was like you got screwed twice, once by mr or ms a. hole, and then by the boss. Real bosses do not let customers screw with their employees, and take corrective measures to make sure it never happens again The retired GWOT army vet manager I had at a pizza chain in TX would ban customers who didn’t tip, were abusive to drivers, or just assholes. It sucked to lose money or deal with a hole, but at least you never had to deal with that hole again. My manager at the same chain in CO was the total opposite. Every customer complaint no matter how ridiculous was valid. You were losing even more money redelivering an order for nothing, and having to deal with another round of abuse from the impossible to please “customer”. That spineless mofo cost me a few profitable shifts, nothing worse than going home in the hole instead of being paid. My manager at a major outdoor retail chain was pretty lousy too, he’d let abusive customers walk all over us then blame us for not making them happy. I’m not saying managers need to do like Ace in Casino with the dude with his feet on the table, but a ban and trespass makes your business a much better place for your employees and the customers who’ll actually make you money. A customer is someone whose transactions add to your bottom line, and whose presence improves the atmosphere of your business. You lose nothing by tossing out an oxygen thief and timewaster who costs you money and brings down the morale of the establishment. View Quote We fire 3-5 customers each year for being jerks. We find we make enough without having to deal with people who have no manners. The worst part is they complain that we charge too much for the work performed. We are 75% of the cost of the average in our area. So we are the lowest priced in town. We run a very low cost operation so we make the money needed to support ourselves. Yet there will be a couple of customers will arrive in a Lexus, $500 dollar boots, $300 jeans, etc and then say they can't afford a simple $150 tax return that includes, stocks, rentals, 1099s etc. We send down the road. About tipping. What is the deal these days. I see parties of 8-10 people who will literally tear a place apart, food and trash everywhere, then leave a $4 dollar tip and act as if they just gave away the world. |

I worked for Home Depot for a time.
Best response I ever heard was from an assistant manager who was a retired Marine Master Sergeant. One customer was giving a new cashier a very hard time over something she had no control over, he demanded to see "the manager". The manager, after listening to the guys complaint asked him what did he want him to do. The customer said "I want a 50% discount, a gift card and I want this employee fired". The manager said the best he could do was either a $25 dollar gift card or 10% off of his purchase. The customer refused and demanded the same thing as before. The manager said how about a compromise, I'll give you the item for free and I'll shoot the cashier. The customer froze in place and stammered out "please don't shoot her in front of me" and then left without his purchase. |

I've had the best results with just staying calm and polite and asking them point blank if they feel their behavior is appropriate or warranted given the circumstances. Then tell them exactly why you think they are wrong. Generally the person's behavior is so bad they have no way of defending it.
They may not admit on the spot they are being an asshole but I guarantee they are going to think about what you said. I think it's really difficult to discount the words of a calm reasonable person telling them they are wrong and why. Ive had people come back and apologize using that tactic. I've actually had people on the spot admit they are wrong and apologize. |
