Came across my Grandfathers adjustable Gillette razor, and would like to start using it. But it has rust in a few small places, I have used baking soda and peroxide toothpaste to clean it so far.  What else can I use to clean it, that will make it safe to use?

Thanks for any help and or advice.

Where is the rust and how bad? There are places that will replate (nickel) if needed. Is it just surface?

eta, are you sure there isn't brass underneath?

Inside the razor, maybe 2 or three spots, about 2 mm in diameter. Looks like it is just surface.

Thanks!

I cleaned and sold many of those years ago. First step was to satanize it. Either boil it or soak it in an germacide like you find at a barber supply. Next spray it with scrubbing bubbles. Use a tooth brush and a cotton swab to get u see the adjustment plate. Twist it to 1 and the plate will be low enough to clean under. Spray scrubbing bubbles down the middle stem as much as possible. Scrub every nook and cranny with the toothbrush and scrubbing bubbles.  Rinse with lots of water. Then I would soak over night standing upright in mineral oil but as long as you pour some mineral oil down the center stem you should be ok. You are trying to lube the internal moving parts. Dry the outside and you can hit it with some Mass or other metal polish. Pop in a Derby blade and get ready for the closest shave of your life!

Scrubbing bubbles (bathroom cleaner).  Send it for replating if needed.  Looks like a Slim.

PS:   I like the feather blades from Ebay.  Very Sharp!

If there is just a couple of spots you might also try that tooth brush with Barkeeper's Friend. Try Scrubbing Bubbles first.  You're going to enjoy that razor. Just get some decent blades. Avoid the cheap ones. There is a difference.

Thanks for all the replies and help!

I've been shaving with safety razor for about 5 or 6 years, just wish I had started 35 years ago.  I use the Gillette Silver Blue razor blades made in Russia, like those the best.

Evaporust from harbor freight.

Soak it overnight. There will be no rust by morning.

I use Flitz polish, lightly not to wear off the plating.

On amazon you can get a  paint pen to fill in the black number markings and make it as new. $7 and will last a lifetime of restoring

Lacquer-Stik

It’s a poor photo, but you should see a letter and number like so:

There’s an H and a 4. My dad’s razor has lost a fair bit of chrome, so I bought another on eBay with the matching letter and number.

H in this case represents 1962 and 4 is the fourth quarter of that year.

Fantastic, a 1964 Slim Adjustable. Great shaver. It can also be sent in to Razor Emporium for a tune up if you are so inclined.
