On my way to work this morning and was about to get on 288S from Pearland to DT Houston when I heard the familiar thud-thud-thud of a heavy military helo.  I looked up and saw a twin rotor bird and from a distance thought it was a Chinook from Elington Field not too far away but when it got closer, I realized it was a CH-46.  This one however was not in military paint but brown and dark orange red deco, almost like Herman Hospital's Life Flight helos, definitely civilian.  Anyone in the Houston area know anything about this.  It got me thinking hmmmm...how do I get one?

My good friend is a former USMC Phrog pilot.   He flies one around the Houston area from time to time for an organization who renovated one.  I think they are down in Galveston (or perhaps Hobby).

If you have legit questions, I can get answers.

Why would they bother?  It’s a maintenance hog.   The one I got to fly in leaked like a sieve.   Every hydraulic and fuel line seemed to have a leak.  Crew chief said it was normal as long as it wasn’t too serious.

I guess it didn’t help the airframe was almost old as me.

First time I enter one I commented about all the hyd leaks. The air crew said they don't worry until it quits leaking.

I thought Petroleum Helicopters and a few North Sea operators used them back in the 80s for oil platform ferry and support.

State Dept has a few as well, some -E models. But they are painted in a more official-looking paint scheme; white with blue/gold stripping.

Seems that one has had a colorful life.  Wonder when it passed into civilian hands.

Kudos to you for knowing the difference between a -46 and a -47.

There is a guy who has a hell of a collection that flys in/out of the local G.A airport by my house.

He has a Hind, Cobra, Flying banana, UH1 and one of the MASH helicopters. Always fun to see/hear them fly over the house.

A more civilized time when twin rotor helicopters were a regular sight over Manhattan

Interesting.  The toy is 47-ish but carries the civilian model number for the -46: 107.

I'm part of a flight sim group that gets together once a year.

We've chartered a Huey in the past and flew with a Vietnam vet pilot at the controls. The helicopter itself was a nam vet too.

The pilot was inch-fucking-perfect with every single thing he did. And we had a laundry list of stuff for him to demonstrate.

We've been looking for a Hind, but the only ones we found stateside are imposed on in such a way that the only time they're allowed to fly it is if they're doing something for the federal gubbament.

Fucking assholes.

Not the hind guys of course. They would have loved to show us the helicopter.

Watching this thread for possible ideas for our next get-together.

That was my guess too. These guys own it:

I got to climb up in it and check it out an a small airshow/fly-in at West Houston airport a couple years ago. All former Military. They invited me to come train with them but I never did. They said the help with hurricane evac and search and rescue stuff. Very cool guys.

I liked riding in them. It always gave a weird sense, like you were riding in a cable tram over the mountains. I assumed because of the rotor orientation. Never felt that way on other airframes.

I was on the Flint a long time ago as third engineer.  We had a detachment of -46s aboard.  At then end of an evolution ( don’t remember what, 20 years ago…) the bird was returning to land but one of the rear struts would not deploy.  Ship’s crew lashed a stack of pallets with a mattress on top to the flight deck.  The pilot deployed the two working struts and landed on the stack of pallets.

The -46s were great vertrep birds.  The Pumas are close.  -60s suck for that job.

We had a detachment of two 46s assigned to the Wabash for vertreps. They fit nicely on the helo deck. We also had 53s that would set down on the helo deck. That was scary as hell as there was only about a foot between the aft uperstructure and the main rotors when the thing touched down.
