I am not a smoker and was asked to make some ashtrays for a local Tobacco shop.
As a cigar smoker what do you look for in a ash tray?

The store wasn't sure what type of design would work.
Here is a couple that I did.
The first 2 are with out the slate. made them before I thought of a insert to put in them. Most wooden ones I seen online didn't have anything in the bottom.
Walnut with a mineral oil finish

Cherry without a finish

I like the lip where you rest the cigar with a bit less length. I balance mine on about a 1.5 inch “shelf”.

ETA - nothing wrong with what you have! Looks great.

I agree with the smaller perch for it to sit on. Hot side floating and wet side floating. Not sure if it actually matters but it drives me crazy any other way

Make the notches for the cigar offset, so all the cigars don't point to the center. Cigars touching is as much of a faux pas as balls touching.

Thanks it gives me some ideas to work on.
Think I also should make the slots smaller? The ones in the pictures are 1" wide.

I think 1” is ok. Cigars come in all kinds of diameters. I believe on the ashtrays I have and have seen 1” is fairly standard.

rubber or plastic outside. all the wood or wood based ones warp over time and dont sit evenly and wobble if you dont seal them (and they will wobble eventually just take longer).

eta: i didnt really read the op throughly. seal them very well and or line the underside with a thin rubber peice or etc. dont make the resting part much longer than an inch or so.

this. also make sure they are deep enough so ash and bands dont fly out or take off when the wind picks up outside.  2-3 inches at least.

also size your "channels" for bigger ring gauges.

Was able to finally get to make a different version.
square with offset perch and slate insert.

I did take the first octagon one to the tobacco store and they liked it. They want a couple more and a few other things.
