There are websites where one can download books that are open source. Be careful because there are pirated books there too, don’t download them because that would be illegal.

I personally won’t take my kids into Barnes and Noble any more. Local one for my has stacks of “Jack not Jackie” and “My Shadow is Pink” types of books hidden in with other traditional Childrens books. I’d love to just turn them loose and grab them in 30 min or so and buy some books. But don’t want my 10 year old reading that trash.


Support your local small business book store. Amazon is king of cheap but there’s just something about browsing a real book store.

You can often buy books through your local library.
Of course you can also check them out, and most libraries these days offer check outs of Ebooks that you can download.
If your library doesn't have a hard book you want, they'll get it for you through inter-library loan, even if they have to go out of state to get it.  
Ebooks are usually only what the system has and there's no way to get anything on special order.

Also there's z-library and Ocean of pdf.  Both have free books in most formats.........
