California will let college athletes hire agents and make money from endorsements, defying the NCAA and setting up a likely legal challenge that could reshape amateur sports in the U.S.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday he signed the law that would let athletes at California universities make money from their images, names or likenesses. The law also bans schools from kicking athletes off the team if they get paid.

And does the law prohibit the NCAA from forfeiting every team with ineligible players on it?

The anti-trust laws actually pretty much do, and the California schools only need a single activist judge to stand up for them.  Effectively member schools can't be pushed for following state law, NCAA would need to dump the colleges from the NCAA itself.

May as well drop the requirement that they have to be students, too.  Let the schools hire professional athletes, and be done with it.
