How do you know the first shot that connected would have disabled the perp?

Yeah, the decision to stop shooting takes as long to process as the decision to start.

I hope the CHP gives that guy a promotion.

I see that now in the slo-mo.   In the original video, the perp seemed to fall back at the first shot.   If he didn't have a gun, seems to me the first shot would have at least disabled him enough so that the hand-to-hand combat was over, thus no need for more shots.

I personally don't have a problem with a cop shooting a dirtbag who is fighting with him.   Key to my post is that I was not saying good shoot or bad shoot, only the fact that, if it was not a cop who fired all the additional shots after the first connecting shot, we'd sure as hell be charged.    Guy in VT several years ago got convicted of murder for firing a second shot with a 30-06 rifle into a Masshole who attacked him with an axe over a drug deal.   Shooter was not initially charged, then Masshole family with some money/pull forced a trial.   I was surprised and disappointed when shooter got convicted for it.

I believe the first shot hit.   The first discharge was accidental, due to the struggle and subsequent clumsy draw.   Not the officer’s fault.

I believe he fired 4 shots at the perp, not 5.

Play stupid games….

Good shoot. Active fight for the officers taser. First round went wide, officer corrected and finished the fight. Like anyone here would have done if they were being attacked. You don’t stop until it they are down simple.
And anchor shots are slow methodical shots after the action is over not as part of the “oh shit it’s on” initial stream of rounds

Really?
I knew a guy named Alf Diamond that was shot 11 times by an AK47 in Vietnam. He was alive and kicking in 1984, when I met him.

The news reported that the guy had a taser. I'm guessing it was the officer's.

Surprise surprise

Aspiring actor, 33, shot dead by California highway patrol officer during brawl on 105 Freeway - as it's revealed he was homeless after mental health breakdown

The family of an aspiring actor shot and killed by California highway patrol are demanding answers after video showed the 33-year-old being shot on three times while lying on the ground.

Jesse Dominguez died on Sunday after police were called to reports of a man wandering erratically along 105 Freeway in the Los Angeles district of Watts. Dominguez was staying at a shelter near the road.

Video of the incident shows Dominguez tussling with the highway patrol officer on the ground.

Dominguez carried a Taser for his own safety inside the homeless shelter, his family told The Los Angeles Times.

The two men wrestle on the ground, and the officer then draws his gun and shoots Dominguez dead.

Dominguez's family said his killing was unjustified, describing it as pure 'police brutality'.

'I've pretty much 'backed the blue' in a lot of circumstances,' said Akasha Dominguez, his stepmother.

'There have been issues where police used excessive force. But I've never been on the other end.

'Now I have a completely different stance. This is absolutely police brutality.'

She said she found it obvious that her stepson was mentally ill, or suffering some sort of breakdown.

'I don't know why the officer thought to engage,' she said.

'If someone is walking on the freeway, something is not right. They're either in mental health crisis or something else is happening.

'He was not trying to hurt anybody. Why did he have to use that type of force? After [the officer] had already discharged his firearm once, why did he stand up and then do it again and again and again?'

His sister, Michele Dominguez, agreed that the response was excessive.

'I don't know when using deadly force became the first thing cops do in this situation,' she said.

Clearly you've never had a family member with mental or drug addiction issues.  A person's rights to freedom basically prevent parents or siblings from saving family members dealing with mental illness.  You can't commit  them, force them to seek help, etc., etc.  No argument that families and friends  need to engage on mental illness, but engagement alone won't work if the  \person doesn't want help.

Mental illness is a huge problem in this country.  Shooting these victims in the street isn't the answer, any more than stronger gun laws are.  That said, every officer deserves to go home and they certainly aren't response for mental illness  reform.

Typically I would say good shoot.  Any fight with an armed individual is a potentially life threatening fight.

That being said, how would CA LE treat an armed citizen in the exact same situation?  So fuck him.  Let him go from cop to convict.
