Yup; the advantage in armor and firepower is huge.

Bismarck was 42k tons, Yamato 71k.

Bismarck's heaviest armor was 14 inches on the turrets. Even Yamato's belt was thicker (16 inches, with the turrets at 25".

Bismarck. The leadership was probably much better experienced due to WWI experience, and likely a better trained crew.

Let's see.  Bismarck was sunk in 41, Yamato was commissioned in late 1940.   I'm going to go with the more modern, bigger, faster and bigger gunned ship.

At range or in inclement weather/night no doubt. In a very unrealistic scenario where a brain dead Iowa captain lets a Yamato close within LOS it may get interesting.

Ever since I read about the naval battles at the Philippines I wish Halsey had turned the Alabama (saw it as a kid and thought it was the coolest thing ever) around to guard the Samar strait.

I sort of think with superior US radar and ranging the Bama might have wrecked the Yamato.  I don't think the Bismark would have faired nearly as well, just not in the same class.

Otto von Bismark was a politician who never served in an active war. Yamato is a province or the entire Japanese island. I'm betting in the province/country.

Yamato, not even close.

Oh, in a battleship duel there's always that chance for a lucky shot taking out critical equipment, but nine times out of ten the Yamato comes out on top.

It has heavier armor.

It has more guns

It's guns are far heavier.

I'm going to assume that fire control was about equal. I see no reason to think that the Germans were significantly ahead of the Japanese in this regards.

Speed goes to the Bismarck, but barely.

Yamamoto was a big bitch.

American battleships were limited by width of the Panama Canal.

German battleships were kept small due to treaties. Designed in the 30’s

Japan said “hold me Saki” and made some thicc ships

Wasn't the armor on the Yamato brittle?

Did the Bismarck have better radar/gunners? Beat to the punch.

(I forgot they blew their radar)

German battleships were really more limited in size by the depth of the Kiel Canal (connecting the shipyard where Bismarck & Tirpitz were constructed to the ocean).

Bismarck's Citadel was very well armored (but the steering gear was not encased in all that armor ), but Bismarck had significant issues with her Fire Control (first salvo blew out their radar!) and the gun layout with only 8 guns total.

Yamato by a country mile. Only thing the Bismark would have is a slight speed and mobility advantage. Bismark and Yamato didn’t have effective radar range finding or targeting capabilities like the American.

"At the end of WWII the US Navy removed a portion of main turret from the Kure yard and transported it to US Naval Proving Ground Dahlgren VA--this armor intended for the unfinished third member of Yamato class super battleship--IJN SHINANO. Japanese battleships Yamato and Musashi used 26 inch thick armor on the 18 inch main gun turrets--this the heaviest armor plate on the warships. October 1946 two shots fired at the japanese armor from 16 inch naval gun using 2700 lb projectile amazingly--full penetration of turret armor occurred with no damage to projectile."

The Bismarck’s crew was actually not well trained due to the haste that the ship was dispatched on her first cruise. In contrast the Yamato’s crew was very well trained though this suffered as the war went on.

The Bismarck only need to stay just out of gun range until the Yamato ran out of fuel.

Bismarck destroyed HMS Hood with about six 15 inch gun salvos, then scored multiple hits on the brand new HMS Prince of Wales causing her captain to retire from the battle. Pretty good for a fairly new ship. The IJN Yamato has been credited with a hit on the US escort carrier White Plains at 19.65 miles. If true, then the longest naval gunfire hit in battle ever. German 15 inch shell = 1760 lbs, Japanese 18 inch shell = 3200 lbs.

Still would be a awesome battle, but size does matter.

The Bismark would have the advantage of accuracy in terms of better range finding optics.  Yamato would have the advantage of much more armor and larger guns 18.1-Inch.  I would call it closer to even.

I agree with your first two rankings.
I’ve never been able to decide on the North Carolinas.
Great main armament, only protected against 14” shellfire.
I’ll still rank them number three. Especially if Willis A. Lee is onboard USS Washington.

Depending on the year i suppose, equipped for blindfire and engaging at those ranges NCarolina will certainly be landing hits but Yamato can't hit what it cant see... So yeah post radar refit 1944 North Carolina > Yamato
