I'd be looking at one of the smokeless design options. SS like above or other.

Some great looking fire pits here. I had no idea of what's out there until now. Might have to get something new now.

Ooh, that's lovely. Part of me really wants to go all in on this route like yours. The other part of me realizes that's a lot of work and $$ for something that I'd only use like twice a year if trends hold

That’s what we used at our farm ground. Dude around here was selling them for $75. Best thing about it was when it’s time to clean it out, you just tip it up and roll it out of the way.

We get those for free around here. Talk to any logger and they can tell you where to get them. I’ve got to drag one out of the woods for my cousin.

Anyone tried the Solo Stove fire pits?  I like the idea of "almost no smoke"

We went Breeo. Bigger than Solo Stove and built of heavier stainless. Love it.

Still thinking about a medium size Solo Stove to pack with us when we camp. Been to a few areas/AB&B’s where a self contained fire would have been nice.

My backyard campsite. I wanted something that matched the fire pits at campgrounds.

I bury a section of culvert to have it mostly underground. That actually works good in town because it'll make the fire appear smaller. Holds up for a long time too. Lay a layer of sand and gravel underneath the ring in the hole so it drains easier when it rains. Lay some decorative blocks around the edge.

Washing machine tub master race FTW.  Sightly more smoke than the Solo Stoves, but way more heat output from the sides.

I also own both a Solo Stove Bonfire for the backyard and a Campfire for the beach.  Will likely buy a Ranger for car camping.  The Bonfire seems to work better with chunks of firewood instead of whole logs.  I use a chop saw to cut store-bought wood into thirds, then really load the pit up.

The only drawback of the Solo Stoves is that the heat is directed upwards so if you're sitting down around the fire your legs get cold.  The washing machine tub will drive you back a few feet with the heat that it puts out from both the top and sides.

You can see the actual fire pit towards the back of the yard.  I was testing out some Swedish torches I had cut.

I'll cut some more up, turn them upside down to use as stools around the fire pit.

PRO-TIP
I didn't take a picture of it, but what is often left is the base that looks like a crown (pretty cool looking)....but the bottom of the base won't be charred at all.  SAVE THAT BASE.

Next time you light up another Swedish torch and it has been burning for awhile, take the old base, dust off the ash/heavy char, and place it UPSIDE DOWN on the newer torch.

Next time I might even drill a small hole in the middle of the old base.  But either way, it gives you more wood to burn, and another flat surface if you want to continue to cook.  It also forced more heat "outward" instead of upward.  A small hole on top of the base would probably look like a blow torch (which is close to another style of Swedish torch anyway).

11ga 1011 sheet.
I can switch out the cutouts for any other image.
Was thinking of making and selling them as custom, choose your own image, fire pits.
Could even sell in the flat as DIY welding project.

Found out today from a coworker that backyard fire pits in this town need to have a screen over the top and be inspected by the fire department prior to use.

Thanks how is it holding up? Wasn't sure if I needed 3/16? My thoughts were 11 gage A36 and change design every year

I have a plasma table (smaller 3x4) and am planning one, sucks metal prices now. Normally cut 14 gage art or 3/16 brackets.

Wife was curious about "felt" heat with enclosed pit like yours...

Ie: wifes feet up, drink in hand and not get cold....we have basic 36" pit now, I figured more metal more surface heat? True?

Thanks bud ??

I almost never come to GD...but I'm intrigued to hear more about this.  Need to run nat gas to the living room and backyard for a fireplace and grill.  Was thinking about adding a firepit and wife want's a gas one.  I tend to lean towards wood because that's what my brain automatically goes to.

We have only used it a handful of times this year. Sitting outside the whole time. Has a light coat of rust. I think it will hold up really well over time.

Felt heat is great. With the added security of keeping flying embers in.

If you want the DXF for this one, send me your Email address in an IM. Happy to share.

Built it over the first summer of COVID.  All the flag stones were buried in another part of the yard where I had a concrete pad poured.  The metal is a set of steel window wells, bolted together to form a 36" deep barrel.  There's two air feed vents buried into the hill, feeding into the bottom.  I now have the stone sealed at the top lip, with secondary air holes drilled just below the cap stone shelf, which reduced the smoke output tremendously.

Bottom of page 1~

They are like a turbo or rocket stove design, work well and made from stainless steel.
Any wood placed inside turns into ashes quickly and easily.

The only bad part is the price.

No real plans. Just a 16 foot diameter patio with a fire pit. We used normal wall block with cap stones for the pit and cut the edges to form the circle. It’s about a 35” ID and the Breeo just sits on top. Left some small gaps between the block for air flow.  They had fire pit kits, but that would have been a couple month wait.
