MSRP is lower than I expected. Low enough that I’d look at one if I was in the market to buy a cruiser.

Since they are designed for long-distance travel, the R18 B and Transcontinental are equipped with 6.3 gallon fuel tanks, compared to the 4.2-gallon tank on the R18 cruiser. To accommodate the larger gas tank, BMW modified the double-loop tube frame for the touring models. The chassis geometry was adapted accordingly to support two people and a full load of luggage, with the rake angle decreased to 27.3° from 32.7° and the wheelbase shortened to 66.7 inches from 68.1 inches. The engine is the same 1802cc air/oil-cooled Boxer with four pushrod-actuated valves per cylinder. BMW claims a maximum output of 91 hp at 4750 rpm. Peak torque is a claimed 116 lb-ft. of torque at 3000 rpm, with BMW claiming 110.6 lb-ft. on tap from 2000 to 4000 rpm. The engine redlines at 5750 rpm and idles at just 950 rpm. BMW makes the best bikes currently available.
If there weren't so many stupid fucking drive-while-texting morons out there trying to kill me, I'd own a few BMW bikes. As it is, its not worth riding on the street anymore. So I'll stick to my honda off roaders. |

Brings back memories. I used to have a 1966 R69S with Craven fairing and bags. Gorgeous ride.

1800cc Boxer engine? My old Subaru wagon had a 1.8L Boxer engine.

BMW, looking forward by tossing out 100 years of motorcycle design to appeal to a dying market of RUB's who want to poke around on a motorized ez chair.
PROGRESS! |

From the picture of the Transcontinental - the rider looks through the windshield? I HATE looking through the windshield. Even when it is clean. On mine, I raise the screen about 1.5 inches to have calm air and shoot rain mostly over my head. In that position I can see over the top easily. Electric and an up/down switch on the handlebars. And who wants to screw around cleaning a windshield a couple of times a day on a long trip.
13 days, 4700+ miles. A lot of that was on buggy two-lane roads. I was holding the camera a bit low in the bottom pic. My eyeballs are higher. Edit - handlebar mounted fairing would be my distant second choice behind frame mounted. I'd like to ride one. And shorter windshields can probably be found. Don't know if the shorter one from the other model would bolt directly on. Attached File Attached File |

Cruiser market is big, glad to see they are putting out something different from what they have.
Would not buy because I don't like cruisers, and not a huge fan of BMW anymore, but this means more options across the board! |

Everyone trying to be everyone else This one is for dudes who enjoy sucking dick The only people buying these are guys who want to jump ship from Harley to BMW and want a cruiser. So, over 65 years old. Why any company would want to be like Harley is beyond me. Doesn't really matter though. You can't even get a new BMW motorcycle with a radio in it right now because of shutdowns. |

You should test ride an F850 GS, to be honest. It feels like a serious bike, not like the F800. They may look similar on paper. They're not. |

I would rather spend money to buy back my old 1956 R50. It wasn't fast, but it was fun and extremely comfortable.

Whenever BMW develops a new drivetrain/platform as they did with the R1800, they always make use of it in various different models, so it's no surprise to see these new variants. I have not ridden an R18, but I have owned several different generations of BMWs boxer twins, and they always have a nice feel to them, and isn't that part of the point?
It remains to be seen what other variants will be made on this basic platform, but I will enjoy seeing them as they appear over the next few years. I am more of an upright seating position and mid-control guy, so will stick with my GS, but I love seeing the new Beemers. |

I looked at the standard R18 while I was waiting for a part. It's a beautiful motorcycle and it demands you wear a German WWII uniform to ride it. It's not practical at all however.
I wouldn't buy any of the R18 models but they appear to give an alternative to H-D. |
|
I would buy the regular R18, with no bags or fairing or BS. i can't really see myself in road pirate attire though
Local dealer has a demo 2021 with 300 miles on it for $1000 under MSRP but it has the stripes on it and i like the plain black. I think I get an extra $1000 for already owning a 2020 r1250 GSA. And an extra $500 for having USAA insurance. That seems like a pretty sweet price during covid mania. |

Here's a modded R18 - I like it!
