Russian troops are making gains towards Avdiivka, posing a "critical" situation for Kyiv's forces, Ukrainian Telegram channels have warned, amid the prospect the Donetsk town could be the first settlement captured by Moscow in eight months.

Last October, Russia launched an offensive for the settlement considered to be a gateway to nearby Russian-occupied Donetsk city and pivotal in the Kremlin's objective to gain control of the entire southeastern Donbas region.

Russia has suffered huge losses of equipment and troops in what has been described by Kyiv as "meat assaults," but Ukrainian Telegram channels have been giving pessimistic assessments on the chances that Kyiv's forces could manage to hold onto the town.

The Telegram channel Ukraine Fights posted on Sunday that "the situation in the city has become critical," adding that Russian attack aircraft had entered the city from the northeast and Russian troops had bypassed Ukrainian battle formations and gained a foothold in the buildings.

"This means that they are hundreds of meters away from the main logistical artery of the Ukrainian defenders," the post said, according to a translation. "The fate of Avdiivka is being decided."

Telegram channel Butusov Plus said there were street battles in the northern outskirts of Avdiivka where Russian units had entrenched themselves less than a mile from the entrance to the town. Ukraine's 110th Mechanized Brigade and attached units are fighting larger Russian troop numbers, which are constantly being reinforced.

"Avdiivka urgently needs fresh reserves and a rotation of units from the heroic 110th Brigade," the post said, noting that ammunition is also needed, adding that "the situation is critical."

Newsweek reached out to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry for comment.

Wall Street Journal correspondent Yaroslav Trofimov referred to the posts on X, formerly Twitter, writing on Sunday that Avdiivka "increasingly looks likely to become the first Ukrainian city to fall since the capture of Bakhmut last May."

He added that the acute ammunition shortage has been caused by the U.S. Congress withholding further military aid to Ukraine.

Leon Hartwell, senior associate at the London School of Economics think tank LSE IDEAS, said that the Russian capture of Avdiivka could strengthen the position of Western skeptics advocating for a reduction in military and financial support for Ukraine.

It would also enable Russian forces to consolidate positions around Bakhmut, facilitate their control of the highway between Donetsk and Kramatorsk, and overall enhance Moscow's logistical capabilities in Donetsk.

I love how they frame it as if its our fault.

Fvck you and your country that no one else wants to aid or help either...

That said, I wish they'd all go back to their respective countries and pipe down...

Ya in the beginning I was ok with some money to Ukraine to kill some Ruskies. Anything hurting Russia and Putin is a good thing overall.
However we are giving them tens billions at a time while we are hurting and the US tax payers getting fucked over, our country is being invaded by a much larger army along our southern boarder and all they are doing in being whining bitches about it. My support has dried up. Let the rest of Europe give them money and arms moving forward. Not one more US dollar to Ukraine.

Quite probably this. Odds would have been a lot better if FJB hadn't pussyfooted around at the beginning. If he had flooded Ukraine with essential resources early on it could've been different. Remember that miles-long stuck Russian convoy? Totally annihilating the first Russian advances might have ended it right there.

It seems Western will is falling while Russian ability is staying on par with the beginning of the war.

Russians will fight with almost no supplies in hopless causes. They are dumb but they are tough. In a war of attrition Russia always seems to "win". I don't see Ukraine holding the line forever.

There's nothing shocking about that statement.

Ukraine tried to align itself with the west after their independence from the Soviets.  Upwards of 6000 Ukrainian troops joined us in Iraq over about five years.

It wasn't until after 2014 that they had a housecleaning and an ability to try to westernize their military, but on a shoestring budget.

The Russians have decades of Soviet equipment built up.  There's zero controversy in saying Ukraine would eventually have been steamrolled without Western equipment and assistance.  That's precisely why they need it and should get it.

We spent decades of blood and treasure fighting the Cold War.  The fear of the U.S. was domino theory with the expanse of international communism under the Soviets ending with nukes flying at us.  The fear of all of our European allies was that they'd be physically steamrolled by all that Russian equipment.

Now, for pennies on the fucking dollar, we can collapse or consume the lion's share of Soviet equipment stockpiles without a drop of American blood?

It's the deal of the century.

I do love these threads to see who thinks Putin is Christ's defender in this new age.  He toppled the Russian Orthodox Church hierarchy, made it a an arm of the intelligence apparatus, and "defends family values" insomuch as he knows Russians aren't breeding enough to remotely sustain their ethnicity in the coming decades.  State run enterprises were handed off to cronies for peanuts in the 90s.  Russians have never known capitalism, freedom, or any degree of justice.  They are a broken people, and have been for over a century.

There is nothing enviable about the Russian government.  The drooling retards that appear to like Russia seem to gravitate toward one thing:  Our current American teenagers don't know what bathroom to use, but at least that there Putin fellah hates fags.

That's literally all it is.

The southern border IS a legitimate argument.  Why should we indeed protect Ukraine's borders if we won't protect our own?   It's a legitimate question.

The fact is that the Left wants to destroy the vestiges of America and open borders are their main tactic.  The last two elections centered quite a bit on immigration policy and the Left's only move was to call Trump racist everyday.  Every fucking day.

They will stop at nothing to keep the border open, and 2024 is the best opportunity to outscream CNN and show the American people what's going on and that Democrats not only are impotent on the issue, but actively work against the country.

Allowing Ukraine to fall, upending half a century of efforts, abandoning adjacent allies, and failing to seize the opportunity to put a nail in the Cold War coffin is foolish.
