My GF got mercury, after thinking about it for a second.

But, she also admitted she thought unicorns were real for a long time into adulthood.

Sue me, she's great in bed.

No, she claimed she used to, which I imagine is true since she graduated from a State University albeit with an English degree.

You learn about the planets briefly in elementary school... why would we be doomed?  We’re not flying there on fucking vacation.

Also ----- For anyone wanting to know how to make a huge amount of "Delta V" that would allow zooming around our own solar system pretty well.

Research the "Uranium/Plutonium/Thorium Salt Water Rocket" cannot (or more correctly shouldn't) be used in atmosphere for radiation pollution reasons but with known technology it's the "hot rod" of all rocket engines for in space propulsion with a huge amount of thrust with very high fuel energy density.

And, oh yah, I know about it because my SO is a subscriber to the conspiracy theory that they have been using them for decades secretly and there are amateur astronymers who have spotted them in burn and have gotten spectrum analysis on the light from their burn plooms that prove that is the tech they are already using on the sly in their secret space programs.

After hearing her rave on it though I did look up the "normal info" out there on it and it does look pretty impressive for deep space use.

Kind of scary though playing with that volatile of fuel where your fuel tank is basically a giant nuclear bomb that is above critical mass continuously and the only thing keeping it from going boom is the special lining and mesh in your fuel tanks that is special neutron absorbing compounds all this so when you squirt it out the rear so you can ride a continuous sustained mini nuclear explosion like a bat out of hell for huge "Delta V" with massive fuel energy density that conceivably could let you zip all around the solar system and back with fuel to spare when you got back.

Omg!! So disappointed

Saturn
Earth
Mars

Didn’t know any more planets.

So much work to do.

Me:  which one is bigger, the sun or the moon?

Her without missing a beat, so confident in her answer:  THE MOON!

Report back here.

"Is it us"?  "Earth"
No
"Mars"?
No
"Jupiter"?  "Saturn"?
No
"Pluto"? "Wait isn't that the furthest"?

Our country is doomed.

In the last 24 hours I've asked 5 people all female from 17 to 73 years old.

Three answers were Uranus with laughter...

Don't remember the other 2....

Wife and granddaughter were 2 of the three...

Don't have a clue what that means...

I just remembered this thread and asked her.

"Mars?"

Then I asked how many times does the Earth go around the Sun in a year.

"360 duh.  No, wait...365 times! "

Also, those "Delta-V" based calculations that have become the most recent part of this discussion.

That all applies to unmanned missions fairly well with transit time not being a significant factor with small exceptions for power resourcing.

Once you start discussing manned missions transit time starts becoming a huge issue as well.  Human crews are huge resource sinks on a time basis as well as radiation exposure issues where transit time  is a huge factor.

So when you start talking about missions to Pluto or Titan being so easy (especially when comparing to moon or Mars) your talking unmanned for that calculation.  Manned missions its a lot bugger calculation with "Delta" not being the only major factor.  It becomes a multi major factor calculation.

This is all true, but Titan still has that sweet, sweet atmosphere to aerobrake with if you're going to use flybys or extra dV to speed up transit time.

The way to demonstrate it is to go in a darkened room and shine a flashlight at around a 30 degree angle against the wall or floor, then show from the same distance away at a 90 degree angle. It's an exaggerated difference, but it gets the point across. Much, much more light and therefore heat hits at the more direct angle on the same area.

To be fair........I was surprised decades ago when the teacher showed us it was the angle of the tilt and not the orbit.

That really did surprise me.

Ummm... that’s not how flashlights work.
A flashlight sucks darkness up it doesn’t project a light.

Proof?  When the batteries are full of darkness they quit working.
