I'm at a crossroad here.  My main guitar is now an Epiphone LP studio.  It plays pretty well, sounds great with a JB in the bridge, and the smokehouse burst finish is nice and evil looking. So it looks good and sounds good but the D shaped neck just kind of sucks. The C shape on the trad pros, 60's style, and the asymmetrical necks are all vastly superior to the D shape. And I also hate binding.

I only have $400 into the guitar so the thought of ruining the value by reprofiling the neck isn't an issue. The other option is to buy a new guitar but I can't find anything that fits the bill without binding. And I don't even mind spending Gibson money.

So have any of you actually reshaped a neck?

By the time you buy the tools, buy a cheap neck to practice on, and spend the time, you're money ahead paying a luthier or buying a different guitar.

I've owned probably 15 guitars over the last 40 years and only once found a neck that was awful to play on. It was an Ibanez product with a Wizard style neck that was physically uncomfortable to play for very long, but Wizard necks are what I'd call the extreme end of the spectrum. I'm fascinated that some take issue with say different C- shaped necks.

Paying a luthier was the plan but I have considered the Wile E Coyote School of Guitarsmithing approach.
