Put em on the rio grande.

I would pay good money to that barge ride out a hurricane about 10 miles off the coast, via closed circuit transmitted to a satellite, then down to my tv.

Just curious how they deal with that when there is a Nor'easter. Or when a tropical storm makes its way through.
There are at least a few storm each year that churn up the bay.
Serious question.

99 percent sure It's been docked in the same spot since it was brought there. Don't think it's ever moved. It's not even on Rikers Island, it's on hunts point.

I worked for the company that built it back in the late 80's, Avondale Shipyard.

Never even thought about this, but good idea, can we convert old used up warships into prisons and then put violent criminals in it, float it out to shark infested waters and sink it?

Never had heard of it until now. Link to the wiki you got the pictures from would have been cool.

Link to the USS.ButtLove floating prison.

Saw something like that in 1994 at Gitmo. It was used to house the non-US workers on the base. Mostly Jamaicans.

Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center commonly referred to as The Barge
Link Posted: 7/2/2018 11:19:26 PM EST
Didn't know they really existed.
Sounds like something out of a movie...

How do they handle utilities? Water, sewer, electric?

I could offer a good guess as to sewage disposal..... LOL to the poster that was fishing next to the barge!

They used two retired Staten Island ferries prior to that, which I distinctly remember passing on a ferry as a kid, while on a trip to the city with my father. The idea of being in these old rundown ferries, along a rundown and industrial looking waterfront, scared the shit out of me as a kid. They were salvaged in 2003ish.

They should be built like a dry dock. Flood it, then dry it out and clean the bodies out. Rinse and repeat.

What’s old is new again.

During the Revolution, the British had all kinds of prison barges in NYC, not to the standards of today.

Was there for 15-25 years.

Meals were ok, bad lighting and the staff were hard to get along with.
Company was nice sometimes

2 stars

Would not go again.

A lot of Aimless' "clients" probably end up there.

I knew a guy that was a licensed captain. He took that gig for a bit. They have to have maritime licensed crew. Not sure if it was the barge or the ferries.

90% of his time was reading.

Nor did I.

If those are air conditioning compressors up there, they should be shut off.

Give the money they save to the COs as a bonus.

"Prior to 2002, an inmate tried to escape from the prison's recreation area by climbing the 30-foot fence equipped with razor wire. The guards' uniform boots prevented them from climbing the fence in pursuit, so they threw basketballs at the inmate to stop his escape, but he was able to successfully climb over it. He dove into the East River, where he was promptly picked up and returned by a police watercraft that was dispatched to the scene."

LOL

IIRC it was used for mostly youthful offenders with low level non-violent crimes
We never did direct drops I think they were handed off to youth services and then they took them to there

Sounds like they use it quite a bit for people that were arrested and haven't been convicted, but are yet waiting to post bail.
