IMO the Modern Farm/Magnolia look is far from the worst design trend I’ve ever seen. It’s simple and honest. Big open spaces.

I hope the farmhouse thing comes to an end as the prices of reclaimed wood has gone insane. Hand Hewn beams and frame prices have gone nuts because of this trend. So many of the frames and materials from the east are heading west. One guy said it is like our history is being stolen.

The craziest thing is it's all usually then just used to create fake structures.

Those "exposed" support members? Fake. Just reclaimed wood. Secured up to the ceiling somehow.

It's a very sad indictment of so much about our culture.

Someday in the not too distant future, it will all be painted over if it hasn't already.  And then a few years after that, someone will come along and rip it all out and toss it in a dumpster to make way for the latest trendy hotness on HGTV.

Why does it matter to you how people decorate the inside of their homes? Sounds like you're the dictator that wants to control people's actions....

I bet you're the head of your HOA too...

It works, when it's applied to a house that actually suits it.

I have this thing with home design - your house should be more of what it actually is. Lean into it hard, whatever "it" is. I know it sounds vague, but to me, every house fundamentally screams a certain aesthetic.

My cookie cutter 2000 sq ft, 4bd 2ba, single story thing in a subdivision on a small lot, built in 2015, would look absolutely ridiculous if I tried to "farmhouse" it. It would be really jarring, and out of place. The vibe would be "try hard", if that makes any sense. It wouldn't work. At all. I'd be trying in vain to desperately make the house be something it just isn't.

It's hard to explain.

The fallacy here is the opposite is true.
Your authentic farmhouse is going to look fake and uninteresting to those seeking the faux farmhouse/ farmhouse chic.

Not at all, I get what you’re saying completely. I’ve walked into colonial style houses and the owners had a thing for modern and it was wrong, just wrong. I have a colonial now and I’m leaning into it as you say, going traditional for the furnishings.

If I bought a Craftsman style bungalow you bet I’d be dressing it up like Frank Lloyd Wright himself was coming to dinner. (OK maybe a little extreme but you get my point).

If your favorite color is Surrender Flag White and Depression Gray with irregular simple non-mitered trim, unskilled carpentry lines, Industiral galvanized light fixtures and worn hardware - THen Modern Farmhouse is for you!

It combines the sleek clean lines of contemporary Capitalism with the poor socialist (e.g. "cozy") combined with Soviet Inspired "unembelleshment" and irregular textures.  Flaws = style, Wear = patina and artistic, broken = characteristic and practical.  It all looks like socialism decor is trending popular.  When your new home is a white and gray painted cargo container you can feel trendy.  Prison bars might make it feel "secure"

Right now nearly every house being listed is with the above themes.  Please no color.  A red star on your Christmas Tree is the only color allowed.

Yes I am constipated, old and tired.  I need my juice.

Yeah at least trend chasing keeps some money in the US, via payments to contractors and remodelers.  I think the most extreme examples of trend chasing happen when you have people so focused on things like paint color and furniture that they’re willing to ignore the type of house they actually live in.  Or they’re trying to overcome a terrible house design mistake (ahem, McMansion).

I am fine with real farm houses. The ones in a residential neighborhood like something out of the Truman Show, made to look "farmy" are stupid.

Don't get me started on buying new furniture that is painted to look old.

One of my friends (recent, as in last 10 years, transplant to the area) bought a house out in the country near us.  It’s on 1 acre.  Brand new pole barn.  It is an old house, but it ain’t no farm.

His wife really went whole hog into the farmhouse theme.  Meanwhile, she can’t stand coming over to our farm - the pigs smell and the cows are scary.  The chickens (free range) “chase” her. She thinks livestock is dirty.  Thinks all the work we do to raise livestock and crops is beneath her.

I grew up in a farmhouse built in 1845, and we did a lot of work to it to make it look nice.  Not worn out.

Any serious discussion begins with defining the terms of use.

We don't have many serious discussions here.

I don't know the definition of that, but when I bought this place the Cedar siding was stained brown, and most of the inside was various shades of beige. I liked it at the time, because it reminded me of a log cabin. (I hate drywall).

We had the outside painted gray, and my daughter has done various colors to walls/cabinets inside. My bathroom had gray walls, with three different colors of stupid-looking squares all over. We used some of the leftover paint from outside, and painted my bathroom.

Living room walls were beige, but are mostly an off-white/light gray now, except for one wall which has a kind of teal accent wall. That one matches the blue cabinets in the kitchen, which can be seen because we have a pass-through deal. Here's one living room wall;

My cursing the trend was it was too trendy and to have some fun- Can't find a home on Zillow that isn't all gray and white.  I gre up with natural wood trim and sort of liked it ,  I see all wood painted, in fact I saw a nice Victorian recently where they had previously restored the wood only to have to paint it white to sell it.

I have a country house from the 1860s, and I added a foam beam to the kitchen because the real beam is off to one side and screwed up the symmetry.
