That looks like a lot of fun

Props for still riding!

Damn man. Was there a thread about your accident?

Glad you're still with us. Hope you're leaning a bike in the not too distant future

I've ridden a ural that my buddy has and it's a panic. It's entirely different than anything else I've ridden. I don't think I would buy one for what they go for, but he seems to enjoy it.

Good for you. I remember the GD thread, I'm a 40 year rider myself.

Anyone know why I get a blurry photobucket image?

Picture looks good to me. Glad your back up and running.

I'll be 40 this July and I've got $1,000 down on my first motorcycle ever. I should pick it up the end of this month.  2018 Honda crf 250l rally edition.

I'm nervous as hell since the reason I've never been in a motorcycle accident is because I've never had one. Luckily I'm not a thrill seeker so slow and steady works good for me.

I worry more about people trying to kill me then some stupidity on my own part.

photobucket sucks, stop using them.  Switch to imgur or upload direct to ARFCOM using the SELECT FILE and Upload buttons below the reply window.

I've never ridden with a sidecar, but it looks like most of the downsides and few of the upsides of riding a regular motorcycle.

No leaning in the curves, no easy parking, no squirting through narrow spots, but all the freezing, bugs in teeth, getting soaked in the rain misery.

Already looked into one in Omaha.  I have a couple co-workers with lots of experience too.
Doing the training class makes getting my license easier too.

Definitely take a class. Local harley dealerships have a great learner program from what I've read, otherwise motorcycle safety foundation offers classes all over the place. Well worth the couple hundred bucks

Is that a Texas sidecar?  Had one on a Yamaha 1100 V-Star.  I've also owned 3 Urals and worked for a dealer in Michigan 15 yrs ago.

Sidecar rigs are weird, fun and weird.  They handle funny as you're asking the bike to do stuff it wasn't designed to do.

Slow and easy works best.  If you're brave/adventurous/crazy you can learn to fly the sidecar.

Classes are rare but there is a manual "Driving a Sidecar Outfit"  that's really good.

Long time Ural rider here. Sidecars are a blast!

I've been riding motorcycles for 45 years (still have 3 BMWs) and I can say that that my 2WD Patrol is the most fun I've had on less than four wheels.
I've ridden every interstate and ridden in all 49 US states on this continent on 2 wheels. Now I have fun riding all of the back roads I missed over the years.

What people don't realize is that you drive a sidecar rig, you don't ride it. The steering is backwards from a motorcycle. On a motorcycle above about 22 MPH you countersteer it. A Ural you never countersteer until you fly the chair, then it turns into a motorcycle.

Enjoy your rig!

I've had a couple. FZ1 with Vetter Terraplane and KLR with a Velorex chair.

I miss having a hack, and will again some day.

I picked up a R75/7 with a Sputnik sidecar a few years ago. Loads of fun and you get a whole lot more stares and waves than any other bike. It’s also nice not to have to worry about hefting the weight up, my 1999 Victory seems to have put on a lot of pounds in the last 21 years.
I got the booklet for some tips and that’s enough I think.
I enjoy all my bikes, but the sidecar rig makes me feel better when bringing a passenger along.  Lots of room for groceries too.

@KCGunnr - What's your overall assessment of the Ural? I've read a lot of opinions at opposite ends of the spectrum (love vs. hate). I've heard they take more maintenance, but the maintenance is easy.

One thing I've wondered about is the frequency of oil changes. 2500 km seems pretty frequent these days.

Overall the Ural is a fine machine IF it is ridden as designed. A max of 55-60 MPH. They aren't a freeway flyer.
Most of the haters expect more out them than the machine has to give. A heavy, 40HP machine will only do so much.

The older models were more maintenance intensive and generally less reliable, they have gotten progressively better about the last 15 years. I hear nothing but good about the 2019-20 models as the have a redesigned motor with a bit more power.

On the oil change interval, the Ural has primarily a splash oiling system. It does have a low pressure oil pump that helps, but frequent oil changes are recommended. Since 2014 and up have fuel injection and now use a spin on oil filter, the interval may have changed, I have a 2010 and don't know.

Maintenance is easy, change the oil and adjust the valves. About like an old VW beetle, except much more fun!
If you are interested in them www.sovietsteeds.com is the arfcom for Urals.
