The wife and I are considering relocating for a few years of our retirement and I am exploring health insurance options.

It will depend entirely on the country you retire to and the health insurance options that gives you. You have to be insured to some degree through some other program in addition to Tricare.

I'm retired U.S. Army living in Japan. Before my current gig took me on as an employee I was covering myself out of pocket through the national health care program.

Look into the health care system of the country where you are thinking to go to and find out what Tricare covers beyond that system.
