[Last Edit: delemorte]
My niece addresses me by my first name.
I ask that she address me by uncle name or Mr last name. Is that shitty? She asked me to call her by her preferred pronoun and I did. She's not my Peer. She's my niece. So is that unreasonable? |
|
|
I couldn't care less really. A family member calling me "Mister and my last name", would be weird though.

I mean are you the head of Downton Abbey and require people to wear formal victorian era clothing before they come into your house? If not, then fuck not. JFC.

How old is she and how old are you? If there isn't a major age difference I would think its normal.
I am in my mid 20s, my uncles are generally in their early 40s, I call them "uncle soandso" |
|
|
She expressed a preference about how she wants to be addressed; you did the same. I don't see a problem.
|
|
It's all part of life's rich pageant.

We are raising our kids to say "uncle so-and-so" because I'd expect the same from my nieces and nephews.

Your OK will calling her a preferred pronoun, but not ok with her calling you by your first name

It's Uncle Buck, or Melanoma Head.

If you really wanted to be a D you should have told her your preferred pronoun is "uncle" lol.

I consider being address as Uncle Bubba to be a great show of respect, and I am honored by it.
It’s a painless gesture on the other person’s part. |

Years ago, I had a friends father tell me to stop calling him “Mr.” and instead use “Dr.”, as he was in fact a doctor.
I was young and had recently started using Mr. and Mrs for my friends parents, instead of using their first names. His perfectly reasonable request annoyed my 10 year old mind. |

They’d get mad if I didn’t use their first name. |

I don't have a dog in this fight because I really don't give a shit what my nieces and nephews refer to me as. Whether it's "Grant" or "Uncle Grant," makes no difference to me.
They could call me "Uncle Asshole," but they don't, so I'm happy. ![]() |

Age difference is more relevant than relation. |

I never called any of my aunts and uncles by their first name. Either uncle/aunt xxxx -or- whatever nickname they went by, even then.
I had friend's kids who took the first name buddy buddy shit a little too far and started to think they could talk to me the way they talk with their friends. |

What in the actual fuck. She would absolutely hands down get a ration of shit if I felt she did not give her elders the respect I felt they deserved. With out a moments hesitation Eta. Uncle aunt grandma's grandpa nanna or gramps. Unless they told you to call them otherwise it's expected and you will catch the hate if you deviate with out permission. You are welcome to raise your kids how you wish. Mine will acknowledge their elders Theirs grandmother is not their friend. They are their grandmother. |

Speak her language. Tell her you identify as uncle whatever and she needs to respect that.
