Friend of mine showed me his 2 liter oak barrel that had JW Black in it with some flavoring that was really good. Kind of got me interested in doing the same, but didn't think much more about it until I ran across a 1 liter white oak barrel at the local thrift for 4 bucks. Opened it up and charred it. After 2 days of soaking in water, it finally sealed up. Still has the water in it and I am tempted to dump a liter of Costco Canadian in it. What say you?

Update: About 5 days ago, I filled it with some Jim Beam. Cheap. Tried a little today and it's musty. Guess I'll be dumping it and getting a new barrel.

Do it. I put Evan Williams in one I have and after a month it tastes much better than factory

Don't forget to rotate your barrel. Over time, the top (empty half) will dry out and allow evaporation.

I'd like to try something similar. Anyone know where these small oak barrels can be found at a reasonable cost?
