USS San Francisco after hitting a sea mountain at flank speed. Remarkably only one sailor was killed. She was repaired and is back in commission.

The Japanese representative signing the instrument of surrender aboard the battleship Missouri on September 2, 1945, thus formally bringing World War II to an end, the European Theater conflict having come to an end in the weeks prior. Interestingly, in legal terms, WWII was still in effect until 1950 in Europe. No fighting was going on then, but a state of war was still technically in effect. |
