Anaconda was built around the smelter which processed all the copper ore from the mine in Butte, MT (The Richest Hill on Earth) just down the road. The smelter ceased operation in 1980. Lot's of history in Anaconda and a wonderful community with many interesting buildings, architecture and history. It was a great short trip. Had some amazing meals, great coffee, baked goods, beer, home made candy and the old place I stayed at was awesome. The people in town were very friendly, if I had a nickle for everyone who said hello with a smile when I was there I'd be rich. The smoke stack is the tallest free-standing brick structure in the world at 585 feet. For scale you could fit the Washington Monument inside of it. Had (many) drinks at one of the most interesting, ascetically pleasing bars I have had drinks at. The Club Moderne was built in 1937. The art deco style is spectacular in it's execution. Almost lost to fire a few years ago and was saved and fully restored to near original condition. Lot's of building's with art deco facades that were built in the hay day of that style of architecture. So many building that are now on the historic register, fifteen added in just the last two years. There was an amazing brewery in town a great pizza place and a Tier 1 Italian restaurant.
