Wanting to do a 762×39 ar. Anyone have experience doing it? I wanted to ask if I could do a polymer lower.

I’ve got a PSA 7.62x39 upper on a poverty pony lower.

Runs great and is more accurate than any AK I’ve shot.

I've wanted one for a while. Missed that boat though

Mine is a Colt upper.  Mags that work are going to be your issue.  20 rounders seem to be the most reliable.

The KS-47 is pretty neat, dont know if PSA makes them anymore.

I built 2. They run fine with the right magazines. Definitely thump more than 5.56 in  recoil and more than AK’s due to the weight difference. I like them enough to do another some day, maybe a pistol

I built a budget model as well.  Shoots fine.  I did substitute a Hyperfire-Hypertouch trigger and and do a little work on firing pin to prevent some issues I was having with light strikes on hard Russian steel case ammo primers.

Do it.  Find the right mags and you are golden.   The banana style seem to run the best. You MAY need an enhanced/extended firing pin.

lot of info here on Arfcom.......

i have a couple of them and my only complaint is the accuracy with 154 gr. soft point ammo is not so good........

I've had a few, and liked them. As noted above: 1.) much more accurate than an AK, and 2.) magazines can be a problem.

The best magazines I've used are the USA hybrid mags - no longer made - that show up in the EE or on Gunbroker from time to time.

Got a PSA. Use C Products Defense mags and you should be fine. Not a fan of polymer lowers though.

AR Stoner upper, any lower, enhanced firing pin from Black Rifle arms, AR-Stoner or C-Products mags I’m happy and reliable with Wolf. Was a 550 dollar build at old prices.

I assembled my own 7.6239 upper a few years ago. It was really over-gassed, and I ended up making a DIY adjustable gas block.

I wouldn't put an upper like that on a polymer lower without dialing in the gas system first.

C-Products Defense 20 & 30 are the Go To Mags.

I like the 20's for being able to better shoot prone, but to each their own.

Also - EXTENED / ENHANCED Firing Pin is Critical because so much of steel case Military type Soviet / Russian / Ukranian / Warsaw Bloc 7.62x39 ammo has HARD primers.  The Extended Length firing pin made my 7.62x39 AR's 100% every time the hammer dropped.

I built one at the beginning of the ammo crunch because x39 is still relatively cheap. Host gun started life as a SW MP15. Swapped out the bolt, firing pin, barrel and muzzle for like $150. Everything else should work fine. However if I was going to go polymer on the lower I'd probably want something more reinforced towards where the buffer tube is, maybe a KP15? As far as magazines go, I've had good luck with the ASC 30 rounders. The recoil is definitely more punchy than in 5.56 but it's the same in line recoil so it's easily manageable.

The only polymer lower I'd trust is gwacs/me arms

I've got a PWS 11.8 in 7.62.  It runs great with CPD mags.  Also runs great suppressed since its a piston with adjustable gas.

No go on the polymer lower,  Metal only.  Use an A2 stock set up.  The extra weight of the a2 buffer prolongs bolt life.

I built one a little bit ago when 300blk went retarded $$$. Been using ACS 20rd mags and so far it's been flawless. Geissele SD-3G trigger seems to set hard primers off just fine using a Red X Arms firing pin. I currently am using a Sanders Armory bolt as it's all I could find at the time, but so far it's doing fine. I do keep a spare should it fail. Only issue is nature of the build....a 5" barrel with a suppressor means it's a tad over gassed. I have an adjustable gas block on the way, and I'm probably going to add some weight to the BCG.

People always say this, but it is better to modify the rear of the bolt, as it does not cost anything. No special firing pin needed.

My 6930 wouldn't run with anything but Colt 10-round mags.  I gave up and sold it.  That was a long time ago, when the hybrid mags weren't available.

So how’s the weather back in the year 2000? I have to admit that I am a little envious of a timeline that pauses at that point. The only real good news to look forward to is that the AWB does eventually sunset and the 7.62x39 AR magazine situation gets sorted out with good reliable magazines becoming widely available.

I built one using a PSA KS-47 lower. I liked being able to use regular AK mags that I have a bunch of. Sports an 11" barrel and a superlative arms piston kit. I found the piston kit soaks up a ton of gas and I ended up drilling the gas port WAY oversize to get it to function even with a buffer with no weights.

Must have been a REALLY long time ago. I have been using hybrid mags for 20 years.

I had a Colt Lightweight Sporter about 20 years ago.  It worked w/ some mags (Frankenmags) and not with others.   Was unemployed and needed money so it moved on.    Since then I've got one that takes AR mags and a pistol that takes AK mags.    I prefer the latter.

obviously get what you like.  I'll share what I have done and why.

Every round has a purpose, we can argue what is best for specific application, but in the end I don't want to be shot with 22lr anymore than I want to get shot with 5.56.

7.62x39 is a capable round and it seems that weapons designed around this round seem to function well with it, AND proper functioning mags are readily available for them.

But for platforms that were NOT designed around the 7.62x39, reliable mags seem to be the weak link.

This goes for just about any non standard round for any particular platform.  The early AR10s relied on converted M-14 mags.  If you could find them, they were expensive.  I stayed away from the AR10 until Magpul came along.

Bottom line, when a weapon has a source of reliable and readily available mags in a particular caliber, I'll consider it for my collection...
