Zoso

Released in November, but recorded between December 1970 and February 1971, and mixed in July, 1971.

So 1971 was the "year of Zoso".

The album was a commercial and critical success and is Led Zeppelin's best-selling, shipping over 37 million copies worldwide. It is one of the best-selling albums in the US, while critics have regularly placed it highly on lists of the greatest albums of all time.

Most people rush to Stairway to Heaven as being the best track, but others have held up When the Levee Breaks as being the crowning achievement.

Here's a really interesting video on the recording of When the Levee Breaks.

I have heard it before = pretty good.
That band might do pretty good if they keep at it.

Wow 50 years.  I was not ever around then.

This is one of the few albums you can listen to all the way through and each song is a classic winner.  I wish there was more like this modern day.

I have a CD cover of this album signed by Jimmy Page (authenticated, not eBay).

You are old now if you remember buying this when it was new.

Cryin' won't help ya, prayin' won't do ya no good....

I bought this in high school, probably about nine years after it came out, but I had heard Stairway played on the radio frequently during the intervening years.

There's a reason guitar shops have posters on the wall "No Stairway or Smoke on the Water".

I actually saw one of those signs in a music store one time.  I went with a buddy who was in a band and sure enough, a sign similar to that was on the wall, but the one I saw actually said, "Please", IIRC.

I think I remember being kind of insulted by it at the time, until someone explained the reasoning behind it.

Used to pop it on and read Stephen King books in middle school.  I knew that the ending of When the levee breaks meant I was done for the night.

got it on cassette.  Played it in the garage the other day.  Had to skip Stairway, though.

And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.......

"Just listen to those lyrics, man!  They're all about love, and longing!"
"And hobbits."
"Yeah...and hobbits, too.  Look, they sang about a lot of other stuff, okay?!"

Truth be told, I did play my LP backwards and part of Stairway to Heaven does say, "I will sing for my sweet Satan" or something like that.

I chalked it up to coincidence and we just laughed it off.

David John Oates would have a conniption.

My taste in music has changed a lot over the years.  It used to be a lot heavier in rock, now it's far more mellow.  But all that's meant regarding Zep is that my favorite songs on that album have shifted.  That's really strange to me.

I think everybody starts with Number Four unless you're old enough to have purchased them in order.

These days I think Zoso is not even as good as II or Physical Graffiti.

And I have a soft spot for III because it was the one I played the least back in the day so I'm not tired of it now.

I never got to see Zepplin but I did see Page and Plant in 1998 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

My top two fav Zeppelin songs are;

- Ten Years Gone (I have never heard a guitar "sing" like that ever!)

- The Rain Song (whenever I need to calm down about something, this is my go-to.  Did I mention this song currently has 7,247 plays on my iTunes as of right now?)
