I feel too dumb to even post in this forum, however I won't let that stop me...

I want to print the occasional replacement part or new part, but know nothing about designing things in cad. Is there such a device that I could download a file and click print? I could have really used this the other day when I needed a hook for a towel rack. But I don't know where I would go as far as online to find files that are ready to go for download. Could also use files like that for commonly broken ar parts. Do I have unrealistic goals with this? Thanks.

Depending on the replacement part you want, it may be that easy.

But almost certainly you're going to run into something for which you'll need to design the solid model to print the replacement part, or beg for or contract to have it done if you can't do it yourself.

It's not like every exotic replacement part out there has a ready-made solid model you can download from thingiverse and slice to produce on your own printer without having to do some modeling work of your own.

Here are a few of the bigger 3D printing STL databases.

https://www.thingiverse.com/
https://www.prusaprinters.org/
https://www.myminifactory.com/
https://grabcad.com/
https://www.yeggi.com/ - This one is more like a search engine for most of the larger stl databases.

If you are a beginner to CAD and you want to draw up some pretty simple I would check this out.
https://www.tinkercad.com/

Gun parts you will have a much harder time with. Not many sites that will let people host them because of legal issues around the world.
Cosmetics are pretty easy to find, but functional parts are pretty few and far between on publicly open websites.

Meshmixer is pretty easy to learn

a hook is a cylinder with another cylinder erasing the inside

you can type in the dimensions for x y & z

this took 5 minutes to layout and will print in under an hour

but i might be able to bend one in steel in my garage in 3 minutes

If you have a paper printer you can use an app like Qlone on your phone to do a 3D scan of the part, export it to an stl and send it to your printer.

Yes. Simple awnser, Google thingverse and search the millions of files on there for whatever you want it's probably on there already. Download it. Open it in a free program called cura. Click slice button in cura and save it to thumb drive. Plug thumb drive in printer and click print.

That's it.

If your ass wanders out of the wild blue and thingiverse delivers exactly what you want to print on your brand-new 3d printer, then kudos. You won a dollar scratcher ticket.

But life's not all sugar cubes and rainbows.

Meh, you guys are making things seem an order of magnitude more complex by pushing OP into 5 directions at once. Simple gets OP started, he can worry about CAD and small details when he gets the hang of what 3D printing is all about.

I'm more confused than I was when I posted this thread. Think I'm gonna hold off. Really only need it to print off 5 copies of the same thing, but it's something I'm unlikely to find plans for on the public internet.

Go take a look around https://www.thingiverse.com/ and see if there are premade models that fit your needs. As long as you are satisfied with what’s available, it’s perfectly reasonable to own a 3D printer without any CAD knowledge.
