I’ve just complete my 7th day using the machine. I am only doing 5-10 minute long technique video led workouts so far, but I did just row a 2K to see my baseline number. 9:26 or a 2:21.6 pace. For “average” on C2 logbook is about 8:30 which would be “my weight in watts” average so that is my current goal for the next few months.
My workouts average watts have been climbing every workout which I believe is an indicator of improving technique. I’m talking like average watts went 55, 60, 85, 95, 110, 125, each 10 minute workout. I’m still hinging at my back way too early, I feel like my knees are bottoming out before I even feel I’m driving with any power - I need to push faster off the catch and keep my back at 1oclock and arms straighter. I’ll take a video in another week or two. |

So being 5'6", a poor beginner rower, and overall not a strong person I am really finding a lot to work on.
I have been doing 4 x "Technique Focused" (like Dark Horse videos that are called "Beginner Workout") / week and one more focused on just rowing (like rowalong videos, etc), to try and nail technique as a starter. The PERFECT BEGINNER Rowing Workout last night i did this video with Dark Horse. At the end of it, he had rowed 5000+ M.... I had only rowed 3650, with the same number of strokes approx 390. His split average was 1:59 and mine was 2:42. My drive length : 0.91M, vs his 1.54M. His peak force... was 5 TIMES higher than mine. As a shorter person does it sound about right that i should be targetting 22-24 SPM for steady state rows around 70% MHR and when i am doing a "2k for time" up > 30 SPM? what about when i do a Pete Beginner Plan calling for "6 x 500M", or what should i try to achieve as far as pacing on these? |

View Quote Rowing is, in theory, a tall man's game. The following is a bit theoretical. I discussed it with one of the collegiate rowers and she confirmed the theory. It's all about maximizing the area under the force curve. Since a shorter fellow's x-axis (drive length) is limited, he must increase the y-axis (force). That means making every single stroke as efficient as possible, drive with your legs, maybe consider a slightly higher drag factor. I'd guess you might find better average speed with a higher stroke rate. In any case the force curve display is your friend. 2,000 m pieces are good for trying out different technique. Try different techniques and enter them in the logbook. Over time a pattern might emerge. In the video, does he mention his average force? I think that's really more relevant to overall pace. |

Last weekend I went to a 2 day biathlon clinic hosted by the WA biathlon club. It was fun, and I want to start playing that game.
Today I finally tried out the C2 biathlon game. I set it up with 4x500m intervals, and 100m penalty laps. For the shooting portion I used a MantisX blackbeard, the dot torture target, a 16" AR, with iron sights, and a tablet to display scores. Turns out offhand shooting with elevated HR is hard. Who would've guessed? Next I'll scale the targets to the approximate size of biathlon targets, about 8 MOA, and try again. This could be a pretty good postal match. (ETA: corrected geometry error) results for today: 2100m/244319m |

Does anyone use the button presses in the WOD email to program their workout? I do the presses without looking on the PM5 and twice now have ended up with an extra "bonus" interval in the workout. Wondering if I'm sloppy or how this happens?

View Quote I have not used the WOD's even though I get them. I'm kind of stuck on 1 or 2 k warmups for other workouts, or recording time trials as a baseline. Today I'll probably warm up on the rower for deadlifts. The past 2 weekends I've been engaged in outdoor recreation and that's set back my rowing quite a bit. |

Played biathlon today with the MantisX dot torture target, full scale at 7.2 yards. Best shooting bout was 4/5, worst was 3/5. This target subtends about 3x the actual biathlon target which is 11 cm at 50 m. |

Catching up from yesterday, warmup and another biathlon game.
Shooting is a lot easier with a geissele trigger in place of a moderately crappy mil spec. 5254/255353 |

So I set up team arf as participating in the fall challenge. It’s only halfway done so plenty of time
We’re in 549th right now. Should be easy to get those numbers up! ETA while crunching for those 1 million meters, sorry to hijack. |

Looking to get back into it, as I am sure many others will be with the upcoming holiday season. Any challenges happening or coming up these days?

View Quote I’m back at it after taking almost 8 months off. I was doing an 8K maybe 6-7 times a week and managed to get golfer’s elbow. I was last on the rower in mid-February and it took that long to start feeling ok. Yes, Ergdata changed since I left off. You can customize the on-screen format of Ergdata. On your phone, or whatever device you’re using, press and hold where you’d like stroke length to be. From there, it’ll give you a drop down menu and you can choose what you want. I like having a clock in the upper right and the drive length a couple of parameters down on the 3rd screen I believe it is. Hope that helps you out. I’m back at it but am going to do a lot less. . . Maybe a 6K 4 times a week. I can’t afford to be down that long again. I should be turning over 3M meters here shortly. After the long layoff, I almost forgot how much I love to hate this thing! Lol. |

View Quote lol. Glad to to be back at it (and glad I'm not the only one that strayed from the path) EXR... Would it help if I said EXR is like Zwift but for rowing? Its an app that hooks up to the PM5 and gives a more game like experience, has good metrics and training plans, and syncs up with the log book. BikeErg is solid. Did a quick test ride tonight. Mostly plan to use this for LISS stuff. |
