I might have bit off more than I can chew. The instructions suck. I’m building it for my buddy who retired from the Navy after 30 years. His ceremony was on the real Constitution. I’ve watched many videos and here I go.

That seems way less fun but in a way, much more satisfying than the usual stuff from when I was a kid.

Doesn't have lower decks, just the outer stuff, correct?

You need to post how long it takes you.

It has part of the cannon deck, but nothing below. There are model kits of sections through the hill with everything from mast to keel including the ballast stones

Model shipways makes a 3 ship set, shipwright series that starts off easy and gets harder that shows you how to get it square, layout, plank etc and not that expensive...Recently bought and gave to a friend. I've done a few ships years ago that were larger.

That looks pretty good. And Youtube is your friend.
The only thing I would add is, don't be afaid to glue in subplanking to make those hard curves now that you are below the gun deck.

Some more work done. Anyone know how to keep the planks from splitting on the sharper curves? Using hot water and a heated bending iron

What is the name of your planking book? Have plans for a tugboat that my dad got out of an old Mechanic Illustrated that calls for planking this would help me get started.

@catmech

Walnut sawdust and wood glue. I saved as much dust as possible from cutting and sanding. If I run out some commercial walnut wood filler

Thanks,I hope you don't mind me asking all these questions I've never built a wooden ship.It has 1 page of instructions so it's a little short on details.I've been putting off building it for 40 years,but seeing your build I'm going to start on it this winter after deer season is over.

@oscardeuce
Not a kit,the plans came out of a 50's Popular Mechanic magazine.Two pages one with the instructions and one with the parts.It had a graph in one corner and had to be enlarged so the graph squares were a certain size.
Luckily I found a Kinkos printing that could enlarge it big enough.I will have to use carbon paper to transfer the parts to the wood which won't be to bad just time consuming.The planking was really the hard part,the instructions only say that the planks half to be a 1/4 inch wide.Your pictures makes it easier to understand.
