Well, time to start a new project.

This one should be quick, just some minor mods for a prewar fit.

ETA: ugh, pics not working?
ETA2: working now.

Still no worky. Are you doing a diorama or just building and painting individual ships? Can’t wait to see them.

The first ship up for building is USS Chicago CA-29, during the mid 1930s when she was flagship of the Cruiser Scouting Force. The base kit is the 1/350 Iron Shipwrights USS Houston kit. This will be an easy (famous last words) build, with the only real mods being to remove the King Board splinter shields and half of the 5"/25 guns. I also have to cut back the aft sides of the hangar.

All the areas marked in black have to be removed, with the hangar section needing to be angled in. It was angled in as built to provide the 5" guns a larger firing arc forward.

And this is what happens when you don't put up the model before the 2yo notices it.

The company has an awesome, no questions asked parts replacement policy. Already have replacements on the way.

Got the replacement photo etch, but went ahead and ordered a whole new kit. Turns out my "simple backdate" just got harder.

As built, the Northampton class cruisers had triple torpedo tubes under the 5"/25s. They were removed and the positions plated over during the '30s. However, I realized that the period I've chosen is before that was done. So while I was ordering the 3D printed guns I added a set of 2 triple tubes. Tho make this extra fun, there aren't really any plans or images of this area, so I'm going to have to just guess as to how it was. Luckily, it won't be too visible. I have the extra kit for when I inevitably screw it up and need to start over. And in the unlikely event I don't, I can always use the extra kit to build Augusta or Houston.

Different model, the kitten ate it. I was about to get some 3d printed aa and radar for it.
No idea where Turret 1 went.

You may want to invest in some shelving to store your models on?

It was on a shelf, she's a climber. I'm moving soon, and it's going to be upgraded to display cabinets instead of just shelves.

Very Cool, OP!

3D printing is amazing. I am currently creating stuff for model railroad that I have always wanted, but knew would never be manufactured, and would be too difficult to make from scratch and have it look good.

I've posted this here before, and am still working on finishing it.
Getting started in 3D modeling is easy... getting good at it takes a while.
I can make almost anything I want to, but I can't necessarily do it efficiently or smoothly.
It often takes me a couple hours to make something that an experienced user could do in a few minutes.
Oh well, I have wanted to model this coaling tower since I visited it in 93 or 94.

Nice. Once I move and figure out my new hobby area, I'm getting a printer.

In the meantime, I'll have to keep buying. Got some replacement turrets for some other kits too.

The good part? It's hard as shit to find, expensive as hell if you can, and I got it for $60, sealed NIB.
The bad? It's a Dragon Smart Kit.

The Mk37 without a radar just looks weird. You don't see a lot of pre-war DD kits out there.

Don't get me wrong, I love it, and it's a beautiful kit, but c'mon man, does a 1/350 DD really need 550 parts?

Chicago's turrets arrived.
Cream resin is the kit part, followed by Model Monkey and Micro Master 3D printed parts. I'm going with the Micro Master.

Model Monkey.

The beautiful Micro Master turrets. And as a bonus, they're not generic Northampton class turrets. They are USS Chicago specific turrets.

I'm honestly at a loss for words. I put out a WTB post on one of the modeling pages I frequent. Looking for a long out of production kit of one of my granddad's ships. I figured it was a long shot, but someone in Canada had one he was willing to part with. E-mailed him for the price with shipping, and got this back.
Hi Chris,  I’ll try to get it in the post tomorrow but Wednesday might be more realistic. It was your Granddad’s boat you want to build, right? My dad was in the RCN during WWII. There won’t be any charge so long as you promise to build her and show her to your family; we need to keep their memories alive! Please let me know when you get the model.

Arrived today.
My grandfather's first command, the USS S-41. On her 4th War patrol, his first as CO, he was credited with a Japanese "I-16" class submarine, and was awarded the Navy Cross for a night torpedo and deck gun surface attack on a Japanese convoy.

After looking for a couple of years, I found that kit on Ebay(of the S boat). I paid $80 for it, 4 or 5 years ago, and was glad to get it. So my question is how come no one is producing that model again?
I mean $89.99 would be a reasonable price for it...

I need to get one to build as Kidd. Our family doctor growing up was Kidd's medical officer at Okinawa. Lost an eye when the kamikaze hit.
