'Ukrainian' Cessna drone blows up factory 745 miles inside Russia

A remote-control Cessna plane loaded with explosives has struck a factory making Shahed drones deep inside Russia in an attack that was almost certainly carried out by Ukraine. Dramatic footage shows the light aircraft diving into the factory as stunned workers watch on, before exploding into a fireball. Locals say three of the planes in total targeted factories in Yelabuga, a city in Russia’s Tatarstan region which is located 745 miles from the Ukrainian border. It is just the latest drone attack to target industrial facilities deep within Russia, as Ukraine tries to wear away at Putin’s ability to produce weapons for the war raging hundreds of miles away.

Right at the edge of a Cessna 172’s range. Wonder how much payload they had. 500 lbs?

I wouldn't want to be a private pilot in Russia right now.  They are going to be shooting down everything.

So it's basically just a poor man's cruise missile.  Not stupid if it works.

If Russia's air defense is that weak, it's probably time for Germany to take another crack at Moscow while the getting is good.

They could have put a fuel bladder in the cabin.

Also I don't think it's actually a 172.  The empennage is too skinny.

I wonder if they're putting AI targeting tech on that like they're doing with the other deep strike drone systems they created.

Reminds me of the Mathias Rust who in 1987 flew a small plane from Helsinki and landed in Red Square.

Where are the air defenses?

I wonder how competent our AD is around DC (nasams and stingers) is. Could probably launch one of those from anywhere, even a cargo ship with a flat deck in the Atlantic

Three Cessna-ish drones that appeared to be converted sport planes, perhaps the Ukrainian Aeroprakt A-22 two seat ultralight, struck the dormitory of an Iranian Shahed drone factory and an oil refinery 1150km (715 miles) beyond the frontline in Yelabuga and Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan.  At the A-22 cruise speed of 99mph they would have been in Russian controlled airspace - using the term "controlled" rather loosely - for more than 7 hours.  A small crowd watched the dormitory strike from the parking lot, so there appears to have been some warning.  The factory is key to a Russian plan to mass produce Shaheds to overwhelm Ukrainian air defense and cripple their infrastructure.

Attachment Attached File

The previous record strike range was around 900km accomplished by purpose built mid-sized drones attacking mostly Russian oil refineries.  These strikes are estimated to have reduced the Russian gasoline supply by 10% over the past several months and have forced Russia to halt gasoline exports.  Some of the refineries specialized in jet fuel, and there's been speculation that the Russian Air Force is pinched, but if so it's not yet affecting the launch of glide bombs and stand off missiles.

Russian air defense is stretched thin.  A third of their operational AWACS fleet was recently shot down and their repair facility was damaged by a small drone strike, causing them to suspend AWACS operations.  Ukraine frequently releases new videos of mobile Russian radar and AA missile launchers near the frontline destroyed by drones and precision rocket and missile strikes.  Russian air defenses concentrated in Crimea haven't prevented the successful destruction of parked aircraft, docked ships, and headquarters buildings by small salvos of NATO and Ukrainian high performance cruise missiles, which combined with sea drones have effectively defeated the Black Sea Fleet.

Russia reportedly plans to assemble anti-drone machine gun truck AA teams similar to those deployed by Ukraine, which the Ukrainians claim to have had great success in shooting down Iranian Shaheed drones.  The Ukrainians have been using an ad hoc network of civilian smart phone app users to plot incoming drones for the gun trucks to converge and intercept and are working on a network of dedicated acoustic sensors.

Geography is not Russia's friend now that Ukraine is using long range drones.  Russian drones have to run down the throat of a narrowing funnel to strike targets near the apex, allowing Ukrainian air defenses to concentrate.  Ukrainian drones fly the other way, at targets that are scattered across an enormous, widening fan of territory, requiring the Russians to assemble an order of magnitude more equipment and men to achieve the same concentration.

These comments are worse than infantile; they show a profound disregard for human life based on where those lives were born. This is the same mentality as those singing whoever’s that were seen dancing as the towers were attacked on 9/11; hatred towards an ideological foe that is pleased when non-combatant civilians are destroyed .

So the idea here (and it appears to have worked) was to fly an aircraft that doesn't fit Russian air defense profiles?

Small and slow: drone (shoot)
Small and fast: missile (shoot)
Big and fast: military aircraft (shoot)
Big and slow: Cessna 170 (ignore)

Could it be a lot less than those purpose-built drones?

Good start.  Looks like it could’ve used more explosives if they wanted to take out the whole factory.

LOL. That said, I wonder if they actually hit the factory. The buildings in the video looks similar to the ones that are in front of the factory next door that allegedly makes Aurus vehicles.

If wartime strategists start to favor cheaply built drones over multi-million dollar cruise missiles, the Defense Industry is going to write a VERY firmly-worded letter to their Congressmen.
