Admin please move if needed I wasn't sure of posting here. My daughter leaves for boot on June14 then she is off to Pensacola for her advance training. My question is in basic does the navy still use the Beretta m9 and the Mossberg 500 ? Just want to help her get a leg up on her shooting before she leaves. Thank you for any help, I am really proud of her but this is also really difficult for me, this kid has been the best thing in my world but I don't want to hold her back.

Orlando basic in '79 was two rounds with a 1911 and five blanks with an M14.  We were instructed to hold the 1911 at the bottom of the grip and reach up to the trigger.  We then stripped and reassembled a 1911 by the numbers and signed a form that we had done so.  Then told we would never touch a gun again.

Things do change, they go from one extreme to another and back.  No telling what to expect.

She is going for AV she says that's her rating or aviation electronics

Yes but the M500 is rarely issued, she will more than likely qualify and stand watch with an M4.

Guess the recruiter has at least shown you this then?

AV

Assuming there's a follow-on school for aircraft type or gear it will have a lot of bearing on duty stations and deployments e.g. F-18 vs P-8 vs SH-60 vs ...

@firemed13

I wish your daughter the best. My son is at Great Lakes Naval Training Center right now. It made my day yesterday to find mail from “him” that included an address to write letters to him. I say “him” because he block printed our address, but the contents were pretty generic. I get it, he doesn’t have time to write, but I miss him, and look forward to hearing from him.

Thanks I appreciate it, this has been kinda tough on me I have a feeling you as a parent understands. My daughter is such a huge part of my life I was lucky enough to be there everyday in her life since she was born and I was lucky enough to raise her. She was my jiu jitsu/mma partner, my paintball buddy , my airsoft buddy, yep everything to me and she is leaving June 14 to be away for a long time. I am super proud of her ,which I always have been, but this is tough on me. I wish your son all the best and a safe and successful career.

When I went through boot camp in Great Lakes in '99 we had maybe 3 days and it was an M4 with a laser. No live fire.

The live-fire training was done fleet side at your command. We qualified with the M9, Shotgun, and M14. Later I qualified on the M60 when I moved to machine gunner for the duty section. More advanced training came when I moved into Duty Officer Escort and then VBSS (never got to the school though). Then onto the ARNG where they sent me to Infantry school.

But yea, the Navy spends almost no time on firearms in boot camp.

In 1989 we had a half day range day.  We shot one 7 round mag of .22LR through a converted M1911A1.

I was an AX which was converted to an AT which is basically the old version of what your daughter is going to be.  I never touched a weapon for qualification again in the whole 20 years I was in. I worked on the SH-60B.

I did however do a lot of work on the weapons in our detachment but only because I wanted to.

Not sure about the Navy, but did see people in the Army 19K OSUT training at Knox get tripped up a bit on M9 qualification because, IMO they had never shot a handgun before.

Really want to give her a leg up teach her how to fight fires in the dark.

Good on her, and post up when she gets to the fleet.

I went to Navy boot camp in 2006, it was those 2 guns. Not much to train on they will cover all the basics and let her shoot on trainer guns before she quals.

My son was quarantined for two weeks but he’s back in the training pipeline again.  He is set to report to “A School” for Machinist Mate Nuclear after boot camp.
