I have never regretted putting too much scope on a cheaper gun. I have regretted not putting enough scope on a more expensive gun though, more than once.

THIS....If the gun shoots goo, then it is worthy of good glass.

I say go for it if you can afford it. I have a Leupold on my CZ.

It's your rifle so do what you want. The most important thing is that you enjoy shooting and encourage your friends to try it as well.

Parallax is the #1 reason I went with a scope designed for use with a .22 - the BSA sweet 22. It was relatively inexpensive, but so fart holds zero and the BDC is pretty darn close to perfect. At least in terms of my shooting ability. For my other guns, I'm partial to Leuopold and Nikon.

Go with whatever glass on your guns you want, but make an informed choice.

Whatever scope you decide to get, make sure it has an adjustable objective down to 25 yards, or so. Parallax can hurt groups if not correctable down to the ranges you will shoot. If the Leupold you mention in the OP is this one, it focuses down to 30 meters and has the fine duplex reticle:

VX-II 3-9x33mm Rimfire EFR Riflescope

It just depends on how precise you want to be in shooting this 22lr. If you're looking to plink away a fixed Weaver 6X would be a good choice, and pretty cheap, if you aren't looking to shoot bugholes as a main goal.

I'm a huge Leupold fan. I see NO reason not to put one on a .22.

You want to hit stuff, don't you?

+1 on the Leupold. I sure love the one on my go to deer rifle.

i have decided to buy a savage mark2 fv .22lr rifle. is the leupold $400 vx2 3 x 9 x 33m scope overkill or should i go with a $130 leatherwood / hi-lux 3 x 9 x 40mm?

Go for it.  I have a box-stock 10/22 that sports a Leupold VX III 1.5-5x20mm, and find it a perfect combo.

Sure.

I've got a $750 Zeiss on a $220 Marlin 17HMR

Of course not.  That would be soo stoopid.

i recently put that scope on a malin golden 39a i've had since 67. nice scope. and it works on center fire rifles too if you want to move it to something else later on.

Check out the Mueller Optics APV scope for your .22.  One thing the Mueller has that the Leupold doesn't is adjustable parallax, so you can get in focus better at shorter distances.  I've had very good luck with Mueller scopes, lots of bang for the buck.

I have $430.00 scope on my 10/22. Go for it.

If you like the scope and its features, then use it. I have a 10/22 that wore a Vx2 3-9 forever. I moved that scope to my Coyote AR15 and replaced it with a Leupold 1.5-5. I use cheap Weaver see-through rings because I like the iron sight option for blasting jack rabbits at close range. I dont give two shits what anybody thinks of the set up, its for me. Its not an ultra precision rig but its accurate enough for what I do.

Quite right.  The larger variable scopes mentioned are set up for a perfect sight picture at 100yards, which is not always optimal for rimfire.  I think a big scope makes sense for a rimfire rifle as long as you make sure to get one that's parallax adjustable for the commonly used shorter ranges.

To exaggerate your question is my example. A $200 Ruger 10/22 rifle with over $4,000 of night vision stuff with silencer.

Is my example over kill, sure but it's a hoot to shoot at night!

The night vision is swapped back and forth from my AR15....

Don't you have to zero it each time you move it?

No. The Eotech 552 stays mounted all the time. That's where the red dot is located. The 552 is used in all lighting conditions, daytime or at night. The NV is on a mount that allows removal when desired. The night vision is only used at night.

This is the daytime look. I remove the PVS-14 NV unit then mount the 3X magnifier in the NV mount.

So your trailer in the trailer park is the one with the new Corvette parked out front?

The Savage Rifle performs like a Corvette. Cheap glass is what's ghetto and it will lesson the performance of the rifle.
