I'm a BIG fan of U.S. Bomber power!!! BONE, BUFF and SPIRIT.... But I kinda have a soft spot for these... Would be cool if we captured one and called it our own... Wonder if one of those Bombers have ever landed in our Airbases during friendlier times?

There's a picture out there of a B-52 and one sitting beside each other on the ramp at an airbase.

I'm posting from my phone or else I'd look it up and link it.

Like the B52 its big, has a long range, and caries a huge load of stand off weapons.

Thats the big thing now, stand off weapons like cruise missiles that have very long ranges and are pretty smart on their own. ANY bomber have such a long service life is a very successful design and the TU-95 is no exception. It has a range of over 9,000 miles and can be refueled in flight. It really shines as a maritime aircraft due to its extremely long loiter times and ranges. And it carries a dangerous ASM.

Think of it as a big fat missile carrier. Like the B52 it has a rotary missile launcher inside and carrys even more on its wings, including the kh series of cruise missiles that are either conventional or have nuclear warheads. Any 500 mph bomber with that kind of range  that can carry 14 cruise missiles that have a range of 1,300 mi is no "relic" from the past.

If I am reading this correctly the range without ordnance is greater for the B-52 than the TU-95.

They look very similar actually. The climb rate of the B-52 kicks its ass though.

View Quote
Maybe, but I wouldn't bank on it.  Even the latest Russian turbine engines are known for being particularly vulnerable to FOD. (Foreign Object Damage.)  The Mig-29, for example, has doors that cover the intakes and draw air from vents above the wing root.  That was interpreted as giving it the ability to operate from unimproved airstrips.  It turns out that unimproved airstrips to the Russians means their normal bases, as the concrete and pavement are typically in a rough state of repair.

At Red Flag, Indian SU-30's had trouble with sortie rates because their operating doctrine kept their separation time between takeoffs at about 3 or 4 times what the US does.  US commanders and pilots helped them reduce it, but the Indians told them their engines were highly susceptible to FOD, and that was why they did it.

Let me know if anyone finds a pic of a Bear operating from a grass strip.  I'll be surprised to see it, and even more so to see a Mig 29 doing it.

A bomber is for bombing. Different mission than a fighter, interceptor, or surveillance aircraft.
They would use cruise missiles to launch to targets out 500 to 1,800 miles. The bomber could stay far away from the border of another country.

I think it has the same diameter fuselage as the TU-4 bomber, which is a direct copy of the B-29.
So, it might have the same diameter fuselage as the B-29. No sure, though.

Seems to me it would be an effective long range scouting plane to engage carrier groups, notifies the fast movers. Seems to me it would also be an effective cruise missile carrier to engage carrier and convoy groups heading to Europe in WWIII.

I bet it could be used quite effectively if properly planned for. Red Storm Rising sure made it seem plausible.

You can use bombers to send a message that ICBMs can't. You are pissed at someone or want to let them know you are still a power buzz them with some bombers or have one fly toward their airspace until they escort you away. You can also load them up for bear send them in the air as a precaution then call them home when it doesn't go hot. You can't fire off a ICBM and then go just kidding.

The Tu-95 has a wider fuselage diameter, but the B-29 "DNA" is still there. One example would be the cockpit. The arrangement of the trim wheels and throttles is still almost identical to that of the B-29.

The Bear still flies for the same reason he BUFF still flies--because of limitations on the number and type of airframes that exist for the nuclear mission due to START, etc.

Not because it's the best, but because it serves a strategic legal purpose.
