go 6mm-284. That was going to be my semi-custom bolt action build but after continual research I've decided to go 6.5 Creedmoor instead. I'm thinking less recoil and less throat erosion with the 6.5 Creedmoor. im running a holland brake on mine. with the 90 grainers you can watch the target impacts through the scope. its my long range varmint gun.. |

You should not. You should get a .260 Rem instead. Big .243 fan here ... But he is correct. |

The 243 WCF is my all time favorite round
I have been using it for almost 20 years and have owned over 10 243 rifles, IF I was to co0nsider myself an expert in anything in this world, it is the 243 winchester. I have worked with it and laoded for it more rounds then I could remember the 556 is the only thing I use that comes close to matching my love for the 243 |

I love my Rem 700 classic in 7mm-08. Compare ballistics to the 7mm-08 and you may decide to go that route. Drawback is available factory loads. If you reload, not a problem. Yep. Its mo better. 1mm mo better. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Get one with a 1 in 8" twist and shoot 115gr VLDs through it. It will then outshoot just about everything short of .300 Win Mag. Who makes one with a 1:8 twist? |

I used the 243 for the first time this past weekend to take 2 does. I made the mistake of using the 87gr V-Max on the recommendation of a friend. Big mistake. The right front quarter was completely destroyed on the first one with a softball size exit. I shot the second in the mid cervical spine, to save the meat, and you could fit your hand clean through the hole in the neck once the hide was off. Now I'm looking for a less dramatic bullet. http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/DrDaveS/photobucket-46709-1353366391178.jpg http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu261/DrDaveS/photobucket-46607-1353366339182.jpg I've always used the 85gr Sierra Gameking...enough expansion to do the job, not enough to destroy meat...I load my own but Federal offers that bullet now in a factory load. |

90gr Scirrocco, any TSX, or an UNTIPPED 105 cup and core bullet will do the job. I don't care for the latter because it has no trajectory advantage over larger calibers.

I have killed a lot of critters with this 243. I killed two fat does for the freezer with it this weekend. It is a killer and will shoot through any deer. I like the 100 gr Sierra Pro Hunter. The 243 seems to do more damage than rounds like the 308 on deer. I think it is just the right bullet weight and speed on deer sized game. It is tough on bobcats and coyotes too. Hammers them. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k64/rustygun3030/70001.jpg That is a sexy rifle! I've never seen that stock before. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Get a 6mm Rem or 244 Win; less powder sensative and does heavy bullets better. So much overlap...........

My Howa 1500 243 is the easiest shooting, most accurate rifle I own. And that is saying a lot. The drop/ compensation for 100 gr ammo is nil for 100-300 yd shooting. Out to 500, it's pretty good with just 'Kentucky windage' of holding high on the body for the center shot. The bullet rides wind well, and bucks it well out to 500, 600. Less doping than with many other rounds, which make it easy to learn with for long shooting. Low recoil, does not hit like a 30-06 bolt, does not punish like a magnum.
Does not hit like a magnum, but hits with ample authority on hogs and deer to 200-300yds. (Smaller hogs mind you. Not ideal for fur bearing tanks) Great on speed goats and 'yotes for as far as you care to throw ammo. And, works with many different loads of ammo from several makers without hiccups. |

Pass on the .243 given your current selection and step up to a .300 win mag, or something beefier. Core-lokt bullets for less expansion, or something a little newer, but bonded.
