An iPod or MP3 and an auxiliary cable.
Unless you are a masochist who wants to count how many times you hear an AC/DC song.

Binoculars. There will be some amazing views.

If you are armed, check carry permit reciprocity for the states you will be going through and have a secure storage for those that don't recognize it.

Maybe a fishing kit if you are camping.

Anyone who has driven the freeway system from one coast to the other knows that cell service abounds.

You have to be REALLY FAR away from civilization and off the "beaten path" for zero coverage.

Seattle to Springfield is not cross-country, more like 2/3rds.

I don't know if it's been said, but give yourself plenty of time and some extra spending money.

This country is big, beautiful, and great. Enjoy it when you can. Not everyone gets to drive around it.

Pretty much nothing to say that hasn't been said so far.

A XM radio is must.

Wax the front of your car/truck with good quality wax. Twice.

Call ahead and make yourself reservations at hotels for the night before you start your trip. Nothing worse than stopping for the night to learn the state WOW convention is there and there isn't a vacancy for 100 miles.

A squeegee to scrub bugs and junk off your windshield if the gas station doesn't have one. And a jug of washer fluid.

Baby wipes and a change of clothes.

Motrin. You will be surprised just how bad you ache after 15 hours in a car.

Imodium. Never know when the shits will hit.

And if your in a hurry, plan your drive to be mostly at night. Very little traffic.

550 cord. This stuff saved me on a trip from Ft. Hood Tx to Ga when a recap got wedged in my rear leaf springs. Tied it around the front tire and the recap and snatched it right out.

Sunglasses. And not the cheap ones.

Ga to Me and back several times.

If you can swing it, add plenty of extra time and spending cash to your trip as well.

I drove from Ft. Eustis, Va to Southern California back in December 99 just before my next duty assignment in Germany. And it was a great road trip.

There's alot of different and unusual stuff to see, eat and stay at. And on a road trip like that, you've got to enjoy the journey.

Just my $.02...
