If the road is 4x4 only,  Then they mean truck, jeep, SUV with good ground clearance, At least that is what was meant by 4x4 only when were out there in 2002
Keep checking for cancellations.  My son and I found decent lodging at Mammoth Hot springs and Yellowstone lake without trying too hard.  I got reservations 2 weeks before we left.

The geyser rides are a hoot.



You just squat over the fumarole tube and wait for the water to start.



You can ride it up and float on top of the stream.



Just be sure your not nekid or you'll just get a hot enema.
