Commit a capital crime in Oregon and get the death penalty. You get to choose your exit.

Because suicide is a sin.  Same reason I can't buy alcohol on Sunday.  Separation of church and state, my ass.

You do recognize that all laws are derived from the religion, right?

You are familiar with the notion that laws should only govern acts that cause offense to an unwilling person, no?

I tend to believe that. What right do I have to tell another person that they cannot kill themselves?

And what happens when you get a lousy doctor, who is either too incompetent or too busy to treat your loved one properly: " Sorry folks, I've tried everything I know....its time to put Uncle Bill down".

the process is required to be signed off by MULTIPLE DOCTORS.  have you even READ this thread?

That's why the Oregon law requires:

(A) physicians to certify that the patient only has 6 months or less to live - i.e. "terminal"
(B) physicians to certify that the patient is in control of the mental faculties

Multiple physicians have to be invovled and have to make those determinations.

- teenagers wanting to kill themselves don't fall under the law
- mentally unstable people don't fall under the law
- people choosing to "assist" someone to die on their own don't fall under the law

Sure , that'll work for a while....then once everybody gets used to Physician Assisted Suicides becoming the norm, you can damn well bet your bottom dollar they'll start cutting corners on getting all the paperwork and 2nd opinions.
Look for a cottage industry of "physicians" who sit at home, making $150 K, signing terminal care certificates via the internet.
You're fooling yourself if you think it won't happen.

Unless a person is crippled and cannot get out of bed...it isn't exactly tough to kill yourself and nobody is going to stop you if you are determined....so I guess these laws are necessary for the poor souls who are imprisioned to their bed.

Just let them go...it's a s simple as that.

I find it interesting that the people who are claiming that the Feds should control your life right up to, and including, the end are "conservatives" who claim to be interested in getting government out of people's lives.

There are two types of Republicans; the actual conservatives who are trying to "conserve" Christian morality and principles and the libertarians who kind of merged with the Republican pary when the democrat's turned into big-gov socialists. Most of the time the two groups have coinciding interests, low taxes, stay out of your lives, etc. But on some issues, like suicide and drugs, there is a huge gap.

Probably none.  I am personally not against doctor assisted suicide.  Hell, I'm not personally against suidice at all.  I don't like murder/suicide, though.  If you want to make an exit, do it alone.

Coincidence?  I think not.

So explain why Solon and Confucious are the two other historical "lawgivers" on either side of Moses?  How does that fit with the "10 Commandments" logic as a basic for U.S. law exactly?

The guy who designed the pediment (which is one the BACK of the Supreme Court building, by the way) clearly said:

Law as an element of civilization was normally and naturally derived or inherited in this country from former civilizations. The "Eastern Pediment" of the Supreme Court Building suggests therefore the treatment of such fundamental laws and precepts as are derived from the East. Moses, Confucius and Solon are chosen as representing three great civilizations and form the central group of this Pediment.

Doesn't seem to have anything to do with showing how U.S. law is derived from the ten commandment.  Just an homage to great lawmakes (not religious figures) from the past, that help to set precedent for how U.S. law should be structured.

If I know I'm going to die a painful death from cancer or some other illness why can't I die the way I want too?

What does the government get out regulating / disallowing this?

Easy enough to do.....

A lot of people who contemplate suicide want their decision validated by an authority figure such as a doctor.
