Little known fact:

Most autos when put in 2nd stay in 2nd regardless of what your doing.

This lessens torque to the wheels for traction on wet grass, snow, greasy mud.

Whats even worse is electronic shifters on a hybrid with the stop-start bs where the engine shuts off.  Some cars might be better, but a truck I drove with that crap took a good 2-3 seconds to start back up and shift back into drive after being stopped at a light.

You can have the engine-stop thing on a non-hybrid, which is what it sounds like you had.  (Silverado?). That arrangement makes no sense to me because of the aforementioned lag in starting up.

If you have a hybrid, the vehicle will always move instantly whether the engine is running or not.  It will start and stop automatically as needed, and it is basically invisible to the driver beyond being able to hear it.  The rest of the time, it's on battery power.

Three in the front or having the sweetie cozy up next to you while driving or at the drive-in.

Or driving with a cast on your right leg. In high school I tore the ligaments in my right knee skiing and they put me in an ankle to groin cast, dead straight. My sister was at college and she left her K car with bench seats at home. I'd just swing my right leg out on the seat and drive with my left foot.

My Landcruiser has a "second gear start" button to achieve that for the same reason.

Yup.  Loved my 63 GT Dart with the push button torqueflite.

Fun fact.  You can push start that vintage of torqueflite.  But you'll need to push fast.

The worst are the pickups with the shifter taking up the center of the front seat.

My Dad had a car in the 60's, Plymouth maybe, that had push buttons on the dash, but I'm sure it was mechanical.

yup.  They controlled the transmission via two cables.  One for the buttons.  One for the park lever.

There is only really one "shift knob". It's called a Hurst four on the floor.

The only reason for console shifters is on a manual transmission. Otherwise I'd prefer it in the column. Console shifters with automatics are a complete waste of space.

Only relevant story I've heard off was a drag racer that hit R instead of N at the end of his run.  The wheels locked and he lost control, totaling the car.  The transmission was fine though.

It makes no sense in some vehicles but in others the shift knob retains a purpose. Some automatic transmissions have the ability to be switched into a manual mode there by making the shift knob into a form of slap shifter. On my wife KIA Optima TGDI when you switch the 6 speed automatic into manual mode it transfers shifting control to the paddle shifters on the wheel

Modern passenger cars have computers that keep you from doing anything stupid.  I drive a Leaf at work.  If you press the park button while it's in motion, it'll just beep at you.

How's this for different?

My truck has a split bench but the center section has cupholders on the bottom right where your feet would go.  Completely useless.

My Mercedes R350 "crossover" station wagon had a toggle on the column very much like a turn signal.  It was up for forward and down for backwards, and you pushed the button on the end to park.

We LOVED the 'gearshift' on that car.

I also hate electric transfer case selectors. My TJ is still manual, thank god, though I do have electric lockers. And of course my tacoma is electric, But still. Bring back manual Tcase and locking hubs.

My 1979 Jeep Cherokee has an automatic transfer case.  Google "jeep quadratrac".

The car everyone loved to hate. The Edsel. Push button tranny in the center hub (I assume it didn't turn with the wheel?) Also had a compass like speedometer where the numbers turned but the needle stood still.

There are 2 buttons + - on the steering wheel to shift up or down through the 8 gears,
You quickly get used to the rotary knob and the 8 speed tranny is awesome.

4WD Low isn't for use in dry pavement, and the paddle shifters aren't visible in that photo so I didn't know they were present on the truck. Some times you need torque but aren't on a slippery surface to prevent grenading the transfer case.

I prefer a stick, even in autos. For one reason, I like driving manual transmissions, and driving without some kind of stick is for pansies.

For another, I don't have to look down to find a button, I know which setting I'm in by feel.

Yet another, it's easier to drive in the mountains without taking your eyes off the road to shift into a lower gear.

Etc.
