Since you guys mentioned it, I'm headed over to the AR forum to find out what I'll need for a 6.8 build.

Title says it all. I have one and my wife wants one, I am buying a 5.56 upper and prob
get a lower just for it. That is about it for 5.56.

I'm not afraid... but I certainly don't need the hassle of re-buying a stash of ammo and magazines. Not only that but it could be a fad, like the next .45 GAP or Betamax. No thanks in that case!

I don't need it for deer hunting here in Texas where .22 cal centerfire is legal.  And because I reload, a box of Swift Scirocco IIs makes .223 just as effective.

Doesnt logic say, if we buy it and make it popular, then it will become cheaper?

You first.

I already am, I buy about 200 rounds or more every 2 weeks of Hornady VMAX or reg BTHP.

Midsouthshooters.com

It ain't working.  Keep trying.   I'll buy in when the caliber is cheaper and more available.

I would build one if they offered a 45 long colt that would also cycle 410 shotgun rounds for squirrel and rabbit.

Maybe because Remington is supposedly (so I heard, may or may not be true) dropping it from production?
I think, when the manufacturer for whom the ammo is named ("6.8mm Remington SPC") is discontinuing the round, it might just have some viability issues.
Yes, it's superior to 5.56 in many respects. So's 6.5 Grendel, and it offers a better long-range performance envelope. And Wolf Gold 6.5 G is becoming available...not so much the 6.8, AFAIK.

I'd rather the 6.5, once I get my 5.56 AR together that is...(have to move to a free state or build a Kalifornicated AR here, damn SB23 and Roberti-Roos)

How many companies produced handguns for .45 GAP?  How many companies made ammo for it?

Right now there are 14 6.8 AR MANUFACTURES to include the 'big names' of Bushmaster, DPMS, Rock River Arms, Stag Arms etc.

There are another 10 companies that produce custom uppers and rifles.

You can even get piston AR uppers.

( ETA: For those keeping score at home that is 3 times the number of companies that produce 9mm AR rifles and about 4 times the number of companies currently producing 7.62x39 uppers/AR style rifles )

Besides ARs you can get the 6.8 in rifles such as the XCR, the Ruger Mini-14, Remmington LTR, and  the Thompson Contender.

There are 3 domestic ammo plants that also produce brass (SSA, Hornady, and Remmington) as well as a number of smaller shops that turn out ammo.

That's nice.

But it's still totally a boutique caliber, sorry to say.

First, I like guns in the original caliber they were chambered for.  I've had way too much negative experience with caliber conversions of all types.  Feeding unreliability, ammo availability, magazine problems, etc, etc.

Second, I see no caliber vacuum the 6.8 fills that isn't already filled with something as good, or at least as good, and much more available.

Third, ammo is scarce, expensive and brass is also expensive and not readily available.

Fourth, humans aren't that hard to kill, 5.56 works fine.  And if one doesn't work, shoot them a few times more, there's 30 rounds in the magazine.

Why are people afraid of having the 6.8mm Remington SPC for their ARs?

Not afraid, just no interest. You might want to rethink your choice of words.

Make the ammo for it more common and affordable and I'd do it.

I would too, mmm AR platform for deer hunting....

The hunting ammo for 6.8 is already comparible in price for hunting ammo in other calibers

6.8 110gr ProHunter SSA - $16.58 box/20 (if you only buy less than 200 rounds).
6.8 110gr TSX SSA - $18.95/20

.223 55gr GameKing Federal - $22.77/20
.223 60gr Nosler Partition Federal - $26.21/20

.308 168gr TSX Black Hills - $32.99/20
.308 150gr Power-Shok Federal - $15.29 (cheapest SP I could find in .308)

.30-30 125gr Power-Shok Federal - $19.99
.30-30 170gr Power-Shok Federal - $12.49 (cheapest)

6.5 Grendle 120gr-129gr Alexander Arms $24.95/20

So how is the cost of 6.8 Hunting ammo stopping you?

Cuz I already have .308 ammo and a .308 rifle.

I'd have to buy a 6.8mm rifle and 6.8mm ammo.

Always with the excuses...
