I love them.  I got hooked on them when I spent 6 weeks in france.  There's nothing quite like sitting at a sidewalk cafe w/ a pretty girl, eating a dozen escargot for dinner & sharing a bottle of wine!

A snail goes to a dealership and buys a car.  He instructs the salesperson to have a big "S" painted on each door.  The salesperson asks why.  The snail replies with a grin "so when I drive by people will say 'look at that S-car go."

Love it when I visited France.

But it should be a given that I would eat just about anything.

sauteed in garlic butter, and served with puff pastry.

That's how I like them best.

Yeah, I saw Trading Places with Eddie Murphy, too.

Strange, but this isn't the most memorable thing about the movie . . .

Had them before. Reminds me of chewing fat dipped in garlic butter.

I've never been one to enjoy chewing fat, so I didn't care much for them.

Damn, one of the best appatisers ever!

First time I had them because my buddy said they were great.  We split an order while waiting for the prime ribs to come.  We had the waiter get us 2 more orders before the prime rib.  They were that good and so well prepared.  I sopped up most of the juice with my high quality french bread.  The prime rib was good but I'll always remember my first time with the snails.

They are damn good if cooked correctly. Otherwise they somewhat resemble eating garlic-y balloons

There are certain things that I'll order ONLY if I know I'm in a fine restaurant, because when done properly, they're heavenly, but in most run-of-the-mill restaurants I avoid them, since they can easily taste like garbage.

Escargot is one. Creme brulée is another.

ETA: There are other things that are best at greasy spoon restaurants, and can be ruined by attempts at haute cuisine: pea soup, pecan pie, etc.
