This guy right here. A pointer. You can tell by looking at him that he's not a Rhodes Scholar. Every time that leash came off, bam, he'd run for miles. Every time. http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z362/0471861731/Pets/F0085_A013z-A_zps292e2e9f.jpg We were in this cirque with a narrow exit and he seemed to be having fun in the water, so we let him off the leash, figuring he was so distracted by the water that he'd forget to run off, and if he did run off, he was completely boxed in by mountains. Well, as soon as that biner wen click, we just stood there in disbelief as he took off away from us and towards the cliffs. He made it scores feet up the face of Pingora (prominent peak near the right of the photo), before stopping, turning around and letting out a solitary bark. Then he bolted back towards us, but we lost sight of him when he hit treeline. I stood in the middle of the trail like a catcher guarding home plate, and sure enough that dumb dog tried to leap over me and continue down the trail ... but I caught him in a flying takedown before he could head down the trail. He would have run for miles before even thinking about turning around. http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z362/0471861731/Pets/F0094_B076Az_zps6f3eb64a.jpg View Quote Haha good story, love that pic. |

Our chihuahua does fine until he sees another dog or the UPS or FedEx truck, then shit gets real for him. Taking him for a walk if he sees or hears the UPS\FedEx truck he tries to go after it.

Boudraux The Basset can be trusted off leash when in public but I don't let him go.
Lady the Basset, Black and Tan Coon Hound mix is a total spaz. We have 6 fenced wooded acres for them to do dog things in, Dig to their hearts content and more squirrels than they could eat in two life times. If the gate gets open and the coon sees it she will bolt. buried proximity fence is ignored. The shock training collar that doubles as a taser will flat put her down. Shes slowly learning. The Basset follows me every where and knows that the food is served inside the fence line, he aint goin no where. |

My dad has 2 lab mix sisters that are maybe 6 or 7 years old, got them when they were 1 year old from someone that couldnt take care of them. For about a year or two they would run off together, and take maybe 3 hours to come back. We figured because they weren't puppies when we got them they never learned young to stay close. They stay really close to my dad now. He just got a new golden Lab puppy 1 year ago. He sticks to him like glue and gets super seperation anxiety when my dad leaves his sight.

Nope. Sorry. I have a good dog. If we accidentally leave the gate open he sits there wagging his tail looking at the open gate waiting for praise.

We adopted a chiweenie. 1/2 Chihuahua, 1/2 dachshund. He runs like the wind. I put a gallon jug full of water on his leash, figured it would slow him down, kind of like in Jaws. Nope.

One of my dogs would need God himself to come down and nudge him past the 10 foot line he has trodden around our chicken coop. One of my dogs won't go more than 5 feet from me unless we are hunting. I don't know where the rest are.

I found him in Tuskegee National Forest in February of 2001. Someone gave up on him as a hunting dog, removed his collar, and let him go. We were on mountain bikes, and it took us over two hours to finally chase him down. He was dangerously thin, and almost ran himself to death. I took him back to my place, and he didn't really stand up for the better part of a week. I had to pick him up and carry him outside. He was probably two years old when I found him. He passed away in 2012, right up until he passed, people thought he was an adolescent dog based on his energy - he had only two modes of operation: On and Off, nothing in between. So, years later, here we are at this lake, and I'm thinking, "Where can he possibly run off to? What's he going to do, climb over the mountain range?" And, yup, he tried. On this same trip, I wanted to take him out to the flats at Bonneville just to see what he'd do with no physical boundary in sight. With no identifiable place to run to, would he just stand there? Or, would he say, "Screw you round Earth, I will find the edge!"? But it was so hot down there, it just wasn't a good idea. |

My wife's miniature schnauzer will not stay close. Leash or fence is necessary.

our older dog is amazing she doesn't need a leash at all
will walk by your side and listen no matter what our younger dog..... she wont run off but doesn't get the concept of staying by my side in her mind as long as she can see me or hear me its okay she also thinks that she doesn't have to listen in public places everybody is her friend and she needs to go mingle |

My GSD won't leave the property, but dogs walking by would not be safe if he were free to roam.

My cattle dogs were all trustworthy, but since I live on a street with a lot of traffic they were never intentionally let out without being on a leash.
I had a Norwegian Elkhound/GSD mix that was a runner. She'd bolt through any open door, dig under any fence that didn't have a 2 foot deep concrete footer and then run at full speed in a straight line for 4-5 miles before slowing down. I can't believe she survived to old age. My current dog was abused by her former owner and she's still afraid of me. She'll run from me, but if I get out of sight and the wife calls she'll come back. |
|
Had a GSD that could be trusted off leash. She knew the boundaries of her yard and never crossed it unless we walked her.

She is 5 months old. When I first got her she would walk off lead all the time. Now she likes to chase the deer.
We have lots of deer in my hood. Im hoping with some age and continued training she will do better. Yall have any tips on this? |
