Now explain why:

A DVD backed up to a DVD+R via DVD Shrink will play in my stand alone player.

An MPEG written to a CDR will play in my stand alone player.

An MPEG written to a DVD+R will NOT play in my stand alone player.

Your player probably does a media check first. If it finds a DVD, play DVD content, if it finds a CD, try to play whatever's on there. I don't know what logic is behind that but I've seen other players do it as well. There are some tutorials out there on how to finess a VCD or SVCD MPEG into DVD format. It's nonstandard but there's a decent chance your player might handle it.

I'm gonna guess that your standalone player checks the "booktype" of the disk and refuses to play non-DVD-ROM disks.  DVDShrink probably changes the booktype (what's called "bitsetting"), tricking the player.

Which DVD writer do you own, and do you know if it does bitsetting?

I solved my problem last night by using TMPGEnc DVD Author.    I downloaded a 30 day trial of it, and in about two hours I took an MPEG, edited it, set a menu and chapters, created the .iso files,  and burned the DVD, which worked in my standalone.  I've got 29 days to edit and burn 18 F-1 Races to DVD now!

I'm using an Iomega Dual DVD writer with HotBurn Pro Version 2.3.3., I don't see a bit setting option.

I think I need to find a Computer/Digital video for dummies book.

Bought a DVD recorder from Sam's $250 have archived about 10 VHS tapes to DVD, painless it's DVD-R format, you can record the VHS on channel 3 use the TV/Video switch and watch something else while you archive.
