Valid enough question.  If a rule/attitude/sensativity is deemed reasonable, most folks take it at that.  But when it's not - you can't help it - you have to push it.  When something that to you, an outside observer, seems a completely irrational response to something trivial - then if you're wise you walk away.  But that's usually not what you do - you push it.  It's societies way of controlling irrationality.  If it's just one asshole goading the situation, well, that could be just an asshole.  But when half the room starts doing things just to irritate the authority figures, then the place to look for the problem may not be at them.  

Anyway, can we start talking about gun stuff again?
