My normal USP .45 full sized.  The Mossberg 500 with Federal Tactical buck is close, and once I get my Bushy M4 broken in and zeroed it will take over for the shotgun.

And I am not at all worried about overpenetration.  Especially if my roomates dogs wake me up while someone is still downstairs.  At that point, even a .50 BMG wouldn't be a cause for concern.  I'd be shooting down a steep staircase, any misses, or overpenetration would go into the floor and into the dirt below.

And of course I'm only shooting a 5.56 which really doesn't penetrate all that well.  I've seen the "Box of Truth," and have seen some informal tests in the past.  Even the Army doesn't really believe in it's abilities to reliably penetrate a car door, though I'm pretty sure it usually will.  Just not enough to rely on it.

Never bring a pistol to a riflefight...

I want pics of these palaces that you guys who say this live in.  Unless you live by yourself on 20+ acres and you have 10000 sq foot homes and the ability to shoot unobsructed over 50 yrds indoors you guys using your rifles as home protection are gonna be fucked when ya shoot the bad guy kill him and the bullet goes thru your next 2 neighbors houses and hit one of them.  The longest shot I can make unobstructed inside my house is approx 25 '.    I think hand guns and skatter guns are more then enuff for in home protection.  And to answer the original question SA 1911 ultra compact.

Look guy, .223 rounds are less likely to go through your neighbors house than a 9mm round. If a shotgun or a pistol is "good enough" for you, fine. Don't criticize others until you know what you are talking about. There is a very good reason most police forces have switched to ARs from MP5s.

Ya I have NO IDEA what I'm talking about.  Ive  SHOT 55 grn american eagle FMJ ball thru steel at 300 yrds and watched its make  clean holes .   Im sure that a few inches of drywall and insulation work better as a back stop then steel.  I remember to tell that to my range owners when theyre complaining about having to fix the damage done by the BMGs on the back stop.  Theres a REASON they make 5.56 in frangible rounds but again I must not know a damn thing.   Read thru the entire post I was infact just redirecting fire at another member who said dont bring a handgun to a rifle fight. I didn't start this.  I don't know how many police forces have switched to AR's from MP'5s but I'm guessing you don't know either.  It could be for the fact that you can buy an AR for 1-2 K (being a COLT with some fancy optics) vs the 4-5 K for one MP5 without optics.  And for the gentleman who claims that I'm in deep doo doo when the BG (Bad Guy) I shoot doesn't go down because he is wearing soft body armor you sir are correct.  I'm sure in your little world the number of criminals who commit acts of B and E wearing assault gear is astounding.  But in the world the rest of us call home I'm sure you'll find that statistically the number of BG wearing vests for the purpose of B&E doesn't exist.  See?  Said BG would most likely sell the vest for money as thats the reason criminals steal to begin with.

Nothing, the UN, Tony Blair and The Police will protect me here in the UK when a gun/knife wielding robber breaks into my apartment.

Seriously though, at least I have a smith&wesson tanto knive, which will give me a little more than just my plain fists.

Gotta love this country where we don't have the right to own/carry tools for self defense...

So what you're saying is that I HAVEN'T Shot thru steel @ 300 yrds with 55 grn FMJ?  Do ya want pics??  See I don't rely on reading as much as first hand experience.  So I don't rely on what my range commando buddies tell me I rely on what I do and see for myself.  Maybe you can take other peoples words or writtings as the end all and be all but I don't.  Its 8:57 am here in NJ.  I'm designing a little experiment as we speak to test 9mm vs .223.   We'll call it the WALL OF TRUTH. Regardless of the outcome I'll post the results with pics.  I'll also include pics of the steel target with .223 holes in it if its still at the range.  BTW thanks for the idiot comment.  Nice to know that someone can have a differnt point of view on here.  I guess trying to belittle people on here makes you feel better about yourself.  And no it's not based on Murphy's Rules its Murphy's Law which states anything that can go wrong will go wrong at the worst possible time.
