I have a Sun Ultra 10 that I'm starting to learn a little bit about.  I'll use it as my internet machine, at least.      I'm looking for a nice SGI O2 as well.    The last working SGI computer I had was a deskside  Iris 4D/80,  and also a Personal Iris that still had some interesting stuff left over on it from its life with the Army.

CJ

Cool stuff. I still have my old SPARC20 with 4 hyperSPARC 120MHz cpu's laying around somewhere.
I have three O2's; an R12k-400 that I use, an R10k-250 spare, and my old R5k-180 that is keeping my SPARC company (with my old NeXTstation turbo color slab - 33 mind-altering MHz!).

Would you be interesting in selling me an O2, by chance?  I'm looking for a nice one, R10K or better.

CJ

The R12k and R10k are keepers. The R5k is largely worthless and has some "issues".

I've seen R10-based O2's on eBay for next to nothing.

Well, the R5k I have has the following problems:

RAM error - throws random errors on boot or runtime. swapping out the ram has not solved the problem so it is most likely the mem controller.

Currently, I cannot install irix because of this and random kernel panics during install, so it currently has no OS.

If you are still interested, I can try and install irix on one of the other systems and then swap it over, but that may not work either. The ram issue (and any others) will be all yours.

It has a single 2 *or" 4GB HDD (SCSI), and can accomodate one more. I may have the extra HDD sled, but I do not recall. If not then that bay will be w/o a drive sled.

It has a CD-ROM.

IRIX media is available on eBay, and this thing will run the latest 6.5.x distribution, but the media will not be included. That stuff is still pricey and I only have my original set and the various overlays - which I need to keep.

I think it currently has the standard audio-only moosehead module, no video and no moose cam.

It'll use a standard PS/2 mouse and keyboard, as well as a standard 15-pin vga adapter (does not require sync-on-green like most unix workstations), so it will work with a standard vga monitor.

The skins are in good condition, and the last time I checked it booted up to the PROM.

I'll dig it out of storage and see exactly what the hinv is and let you know.

If you are still interested, PM me your address, and for the cost of shipping, its yours.

PS No tech support!!!! Once its your, its yours! Muhahahaha!

ETA sinister laugh.

until the p2 300mhx with 320meg ram began having HD issues in December we used that.  Running Windows 98SE.  Got a Gateway 838GM package at Best Buy for about $800 (son works there) Pentium 4 3.0ghz, 200gb HD, CD and DVD-RW,

Connected to SBC/Yahoo DSL via a refurbed Linksys $20 router from Fry's.  that router is about 4 years old now.  And those are the 2 newest machines in the house.  Windows XP

Use Firefox for primary browser on both.

My newest has an Athlon-3000 w/1Gb RAM and a (nice) AGP videocard, built for $2400 about a year ago.

I figured a couple days ago to update my system, would cost $200 for a (lower-end!) dual-core AMD, $100 for a mobo, $200 for 2 gigs RAM and then $300 for a decent PCI-e video card.... like, $1000. And that's using the old case and hard-drives...

1.  Vid card -- Have you looked at the NVidia GeForce 6800GS?  They're going for just under $200 (the linked one is around $160 after rebate) and a great deal IMO.  Sure you can get a GeForce 7800GT for $300, but the 6800GS (and GT) are probably the best "bang for your buck" value right now in NVidia PCI-E x16 vid cards.

2.  Memory:  consider Corsair's Value Select RAM if you don't need ultra-fast speed.  I think Newegg sells the 2 GB 184-pin kit for $157.

A vintage 1998 Gateway 733 PIII and 98/2.

Only because the woman that lives here thinks she needs another car..........and the last time I brought it up she told me to stop buying guns.

So I told her FUCK NO, if this one quits I'll just charge a better new one than what I was wanting to begin with.

OH WELL, nothing from nothing still leaves nothing, Right?

I have a few, but I don't really use them anymore; two Newton MessagePad's (2000 and 2100), a Cassiopia (WinCE) and  a Sony Clie (PalmOS).

Fixed it for ya - since at the end of 1999 the top end Gateway system was the Professional 550 (pIII) series.

I 'try'.  The most successful pda user of anyone I know actually uses some sort of hybrid pda/cellphone.  It's the first one that I've seen that really works well.
